  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Albert Hughes...

Albert's a really down to earth gent who gave me a nice interview for my RED book. He describes some of the reasons why he went for RED with The Book of Eli and his experiences working with the camera. :)

Awesome quote Jim! I feel in good company

A great quote to Jim and all at Red, knowing their changing image history.

Being only a corporate video producer its a great vote for a great product. Waiting for Scarlet (as thats my client budget point) lm waiting to change history for my clients with fantastic images at a price point unheard of.

Many thanks also to Peter Majtan who has made Red One footage available on Scarlet user. Having play around with the images on red alert and FCP l can only wait with anticipated patience for Scarlet to become available when its ready, fantastic imagery.

Having read many pages on these sites l still wonder why people bang on about the Canon D5 and Panasonic G1 etc, there not film cameras as H.264 is not a great codec and most of the footage really isn't that good compared to Red or lm sure to the Scarlet once released or a good video camera. Panasonic released a so call G1 trailer Joshua tree!!! its all kings new cloths, what a load of rubbish.

I film on a HPX301 in AVCintra 100 25P down to Pro Res HQ 422 and DVCPRO HD 1080 25P edit FCP

But hey all you guys know Red will be the only thing worth filming on in town once Scarlet is here http://www.reduser.net/forum/images/icons/icon7.gif

Very best from Hampshire in the UK

Co-Director, "Book of Eli".

"RED was the answer to all my dreams. Speed, flexibility and an incredible look that can be seen right away. I was especially thrilled with my options in post, applying different looks, repositioning the image or scanning in a bit to reframe. At one time, I considered myself a film purist, swearing never to go digital but RED has changed all of that, proving itself against film in a side by side test. With all of its flexibility, I cant see going back to film." Albert Hughes.

Pretty nice compliment for our whole team's effort.

Jim

Those are exactly the same arguments and expressed in the same way I do everytime a producer, director or client says "wow"!

Congratulations to all the Red Team and thank you very much!:cheers2:

sounds very funny... there`s still no digital cams which could kill film, of course it`s matter of time, but film still rocks!
but anyway, full respect to red, i cant wait to see epic and scarlet, this two cams could be reason to change even my mind, but we will see that!

Nothing can change if you are not ready to accept the reality. Nothing comes close to film now or never since the development of film never going to stop.

Digital cinema cameras like Red One, SI2K, Phantom HD, Sony Cine Alta F35 are not a comparative film quality cameras. They have there depth of field, look, saturation etc., of their own which neither video nor film.

People always try to compare with film which will be diminishing in near future with the advent of digital cinema projection and digital cinema servers. Even Labs across the globe are gearing up for Digital Cinema Encoding rather than chemical processing.

Nothing will change unless we change...

Nothing comes close? Really?

Is that why CineAlta, or Red footage can be intercut with 35mm footage, CC'd the same and the audience can't tell the difference?

I think that they are DEFINITELY able to be compared to film quality QUITE favorable, especially since the winner of best picture AND best cinematography last year was shot mostly in Digital, and many of my friends who are big film buffs didn't even realize it. No one I talked to who doesn't read HDVideo Pro or American Cinematographer knew that the SI-2K was used at all.

I think that Professional Digital Cinema cams are VERY comparable to film, and can beat film in many ways because of lack of generational degradation that comes from each step of film printing.

Film is limited by frame size, the only way up is to go to IMAX footage, which still beats every digital cam on the planet in it's native format, BUT that is about as far as film can economically go, and even then only for projects with astronomical budgets.

35mm has in many ways reached it peak potential, since you literally can't make the crystals smaller, while digital cinema cams don't have the same limits since it's not just a matter of making the sensor sites smaller, but you can make the sensor itself larger without the same price hit that you take from increasing the size of footage.

While film will continue to improve for the next decade or so, it simply can't beat digital in the long term in regards to resolving ability.

If you read Albert's comments, they did a very expensive side by side test of film vs. RED before selecting the camera for Book of Eli. It wasn't a cost issue. After shooting and DI they did a film out and screened them for the producers. As Albert said... when the producers pointed to the better footage (on the right) they said it was film. Albert told them they were half right. The better footage was on the right, but that was the RED footage. :-)

Jim

When you found out about that, it must have given you tingles down your back huh Jim.

:P

awesome. and you guys are worried about asics? Ha! RED ONE kicks ass. Any improvement over what we have is going to be devoured. S35 FF35 monstro
again, awesome.

All you can do is continue to try to deliver quality products... sure someone may come along and try to one up you guys... but who cares?

I appreciate that you guys want to release this stuff more than we do... as hard as that may be for some on here to comprehend. Most of us get it.

Stick to your guns is my two cents. Fuck the market. Just make stuff that you guys want to use and I'm sure you will please a lot of people along the way. Keep on keepin on. Our company hopes to own every brain and product you guys make :)

Not as a fanboy, but because RAW image capture, in all it's nuances, is just plain smart. And the puzzle pieces I'm putting together from your recent releases point to an awesome future for digital cinema.

to be honest, Im more worried about finding cool stories to tell with all this gear, :undecided: more than I am worried about cool new technology from RED. Thank you very much for sharing these stories. Well deserved kudos.
