We are about to travel by airplane with our RED One, and quite frankly that fact alone is making me nervous. We plan on hand carrying all our gear and clearing that with air company in advance. However, since the camera looks more like a bomb than a camera and hardly anyone has seen this thing, I can imagine they may still want to get it through an x-ray machine. Is this hazardous to the camera, its batteries and hard disk. My gut feeling says 'um yes it is'. Any advise on that?

This must have come up before, but I probably didn't hit the right combination of words in the search. So any suggestions or links to answering threads are welcome. Thanks in advance!

They won't care about the camera, but they will care about the batteries. Check with your airline about their latest guidelines as they differ from country to country.

You won't get any special privileges from your airline just because you've got a RED, so don't try and carry on more than you are allowed.

In theory any magnetic device can wipe the data off a memory card, so always be aware of where you are leaving those, but the only way an x-ray machine will damage your camera is if it falls off the end - so just use some common sense and a decent bag.

I hand carry my body and EVF in one Pelican all the time. No one cares and it fits in the overhead.

EVERYTHING else gets shipped through a shipping company for $380 a trip, free of ANY hassle (including the batteries).

You have nothing to worry about with the camera and airports and x-rays...

I carried 3 RED One bodies in a standard carry on bag in Sept 07 for IBC. Nobody had seen it then for sure, the TSA (US airport security) guys were really interested in it when it went through the X-Ray. I told them it was a Ultra HD camera and they just thought it was cool to see something new.

It used to be that security would want you to power up the camera to prove it was really a working camera and not something else. So I would make sure I had a battery and a LCD, but that hasn't happened in a long time. The worst thing that happened to me recently is United Airlines delayed my tripod and I had to rent one for the shoot. I am way more worried about lost checked baggage a good reason to carry on as much as you can.

I carry the camera in this custom bag for the RED One. Designed specifically for airline carry on. The camera handle can stay on and stick out the top so you can carry with the strap or the camera handle.
It comes from www.molly-b.com

I had no problems flying with my red apart from the fact it was heavy and had to carry it everywhere as i took it carry on. I have an old Easyrig Turtle X bag that Johan Hellsten from Easyrig gave me its perfect for carrying the important bits on an aircraft.

I took my Red to Amsterdam to direct a music video out there and went through Luton Airport secuirty, i had to take the camera out of my carry on and put it in its own tray.

Everyone who was free in security came over and had a look at this thing more like wow!!! than what is that???? they were quite a strange moment but cool.

Andi.

pelican 1510.

red one body, 3 batteries, or 2 and a HD.

$380 for shipping everything is wonderful! Who is it and how do I get in contact with them?
For me, I usually use FedEx but the last 2 years or so they have been EXTREMELY hard on my gear..nearly an insurance claim each time....ripping tops off TuffPak tripod cases, huge gouges and tire marks on my StormCases, etc...

Just finished 2 weeks of travel. Several airplanes later no problems. I travel with the camera, 3 Swits 95's (probably shouldn't risk carrying the 140WH in case they care) the 18-50, 11-16, and one 85 RP, an LCD and some cables, the Laptop and CF cards and two drives. It ALL fits in the Airport Addicted 2.0 by Thinktank and fits in the overhead or under the seat. TSA checked it all, every time, and no problem. My back however, well that's a whole other story.
