I'm heading out to do my first large traveling gig with the Epic, and after a lot of investigating, settled on this carry-on legal case. I'm very happy with it, so I figured I'd post a photo of how it's configured. It's made by HPRC. It safely holds my Epic with side handle, 3 Canon zooms, 3 Canon primes, a Duclos zoom, the Bomb EVF, Wooden Camera's Anton-Bauer plate and the Top Mount. All that's needed to re-assemble it is two twists of a hex wrench for the Top Mount, and sliding on the Spinner/Bomb unit.

Now if I could just get the other 18 cases of gear as compact!

Take the lens OFF the EPIC for travel :confused5:

Unless you travel to Aus or NZ where the carry-on is a ridiculous 7k / 15lbs. Thot those were tough guys down under

Paul, do you say something as you check in ?
Can you paraphrase your plead, so we can see what might work ?
Thanks!

I've been all over Asia, India and Australia and if you explain politely to checkin and crew that it's uncheckable camera gear they will accommodate you. The key word here is 'politely' :-)

I'm always carrying a Lowerpro Pro Runner 450 with an Epic M, six lenses, two 160wH batteries and other stuff, so it's big and it weighs over 16Kilos (https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?...0619602.114913.418652008151219&type=3&theater). When asked to check it I smile and politely explain that there's over $70,000's worth of camera in there and the airline surely wouldn't want a big claim like that on their hands if it goes missing. A smile and a bit of charm are usually enough, even with the guys. Airlines normally have a special policy for photographers, especially if you're flying business class, which I usually insist on as part of the job due to the amount of other gear that we check in.

I have travelled many times to Central and South America, Africa on several occasions and each time my carry on camera case / Bag were slightly over size and over weight. Lucky or not in every case once I politely explained the content they allowed me to carry it on. KLM actually had me speak to the flight crew before boarding to get the okay. I have never been denied.

JetStar has private contractors at the gate with a scale. Count on getting busted. Work around is to have a XXXL pocket coat with 30 pockets for all the camera bits. No limit on what you can wear

+1 on that. Though, I've never flown JetStar, but I've had that happen many times on Air France. That said, Air France is still my favorite airline...

By the way, airports in Australia are literally the most strict regarding baggage of any other country I've been to.

I'm currently trying to figure out how to fit 8TB in hard drives, a D800 and a 50-500mm lens in my pockets for a trip to Paris and Berlin this July. Any suggestions?

Do not put the 50-500mm in your pants!

With respect, if you fly jetstar you're asking for trouble. If it's a paid job, insist on going business class on a reputable airline.

Having said that, I was on the KL-Manila flight a couple of weeks ago, sitting in the front row of business, waiting for the plane to take off, when in come a raggey bunch of tattooed 20-somethings, all carrying instruments, including a Keytar. It was the crew and band of LMFAO, who had been filming a new vid in the area. They went through to coach. :-)

LOL! I know, I know... Just kidding. Hehe. :D

A lot of airlines allow a carry-on and a second bag that they classify as an "Accessory Bag." The accessory bag is not weighed, but needs to measure less than a certain length, width and depth. I plan on stuffing two 4TB hard drives (5.96 pounds) in those and hang the D800 along with the 50-500mm lens (6.35 pounds) around my neck as I board the plane.

And yes, I do indeed count every gram. XD

This case is fantastic. It actually accomodates the entire DeepX housing with the camera, battery and monitor inside.

JetStar have their staff at the checkin and at the gate. I travelled about 30 times with this case and the Epic, Master Primes or the entire housing inside. Always carry on. Never had a problem.

On one occassion one poorly informed JetStar staff told me that I could not have another bag, which had my laptop and all sorts of bits and pieces...maybe 5kg all up. Luckily I had lots of deep pockets and shoved the laptop under my belt. ..

Besides the carry on, I have always taken on board "ALL OVER THE WORLD" and with countless Airlines also my CAMERA BAG, with an excess total weight of 50+LB!! (There is a 17" MBP under the Epic cameras... ;)

They did however make trouble for the large Pelican case with the Atom rig, in just about every Airport I flew that thing in, for this I strongly advise any one with such large cases to just dump it and make two smaller ones.
But for the carry on, you are allowed a "CAMERA BAG" and there are no specifications for size and weight, so no matter how much S^%$# they give you they have to allow for it on board, they called the Head Stewart and they called the Captain, then the bag went on board just the same as there is no regulations written any were saying that the camera bag needs ot be of a certain weight or size, at the worst case if does not fit in above compartment or under your seat, they'll place in the Captain's compartment a quite large one... ;)

HAPPY TRAVELS... ;)

Don't fly with Easyjet, as 1 carry on bag means Exaclly that. Ladies are not allowed an additional hand bag.

Natasha to Boris the spy: "Is that a lens in your pants, or are you happy to see me?

Wow - Is that a rule for any airline?

I remember in ancient times past, there was no weight limit on a golf bag, so I'd put very heavy stuff in there, but ... never a camera. Gotta learn how to trick the system
