How does a person go about obtaining a "Media Pass"' to get larger equipment on Plane Flights?

All the airline websites state if you're a member if a media network or commercial film company you can check larger equipment for $50 per piece.

I am an independent company. How can I prove this to them and get lights and larger equipment permitted on flights?

Thank you to the veterans who are willing to help us young guys!

I have used any laminated pass that has a production company name and a photo. National geographic press pass, random low budget laminated ID, whatever. They just want to see something official looking. Make one up with your company's name, your photo, and large words that say "Press Pass". have it laminated and put it on a lanyard. That should do the trick.

The policies vary from one airline to another, so call them. Most airlines let people bring oversized equipment for an additional handling fee. You don't have to be media or a production company. You can be a salesperson who needs to bring product cases, presentation equipment, etc.. Doesn't really matter. They usually just want a good reason for you wanting to bring oversized baggage or equipment along with you. Never had a problem if I make arrangements ahead or speak with them at the ticket counter.

Haven't tried the phony "press pass" approach, but haven't needed it. The business card along with the matching logos on the professional-looking equipment cases/bags usually works just fine. And I've only had to show that once...

I always fly American or United. None of my cases are oversize or overweight but I do always try to get a break on the excess charges since I typically check 10 to 12 bags. I just say "photo gear" and they give me $50 a bag rate. Sometimes I have to have a newbie ticket agent check with their supervisor, but it's usually cool. I've never showed them anything more than my business card. A laminate would prolly get you through with less hassle though.
