After meeting with Anthony from Air Sea Land Gear and checking out the RIP and RIB units at the Los Angeles REDUSERGROUP, I found the perfect solution for my camera.

For those who are not familiar RIP unit, is a specially designed breakout box for the red that changes all you Din connectors to BNC, it also changes all the mini XLRs connectors on the camera and makes then Industry standard XLRs and it does a lot more.

At first glance when I checked the Air Sea Land Gear website it looked like the RIP unit was going to be way to heavy and big for the camera, to my surprise the RIP unit ways less than the EVF and locks solidly to camera with out voiding RED warranty and protects your camera connectors from the elements.

Element Technicas break out box is great (they also provide great solutions for RED), but its more like and addition or an accessory for the RED Camera while the RIP unit from Air Sea Land is really an upgrade for your gear,( it takes it to the next level and much more), it solves a lot of the problems with cables and functionality. It only ways a little more than ETs box but it provides so much more. Once attached to the camera there is really no need to remove it.

The RIP unit is lightweight, there are no need for extra connectors from red, and also you don't have to worry if you have the right audio cables for your camera, if it has been upgraded or not. The unit works both with the old audio board and new, so no more buying adaptors either for audio or video and then having to change them when you get your camera upgraded, which I have had to do twice already with my system. It also helps get rid of all the cable clutter that can happen with the RED since the connectors are at a weird angle and you need adaptors. For SURE a time saver and helps you with cable clutter.

Another great addition is the RIB unit which works together with the RIP. The RIB allows you to control the RED camera about 50 feet away with one DVI cable. This really rocks!, just imagine having to run 200 feet of audio cable on a 50 foot jib (if you are using 4 channels of course) plus your audio monitoring cable, plus your video cable to the jib op and video village, plus a time code genlock cable if multiple cameras are being used, plus having to bring the camera up and down every time you want to hit the record button, uuuufffffff thats a lot of plusses and cables to worry about, that can be solve with on cable with the RIP and RIB combo.

Another great addition of this unit is the audio monitoring jack, it has a manual knob to increase the monitoring levels of your headphones, thats great no more need to go into the camera menu to have to raise your headphone level. It also has room to screw in a mic onboard the red.

Being that I'm one of the main REDLAUSERGROUP members, also the RED BOOT camp teacher and a working cinematographer I get to see a lot of gear for the RED. I dont work for Air Sea Land Gear but I just have to give this guy's KUDOS GREAT JOB. Anybody that has taken my class or has met me at the user groups know I'm straight forward and don't beet around the bush.

It goes to show you how creative the Red Community has become to solve regular logistical problems that have to do with production. The RED camera has really changed everything and has giving the opportunity for creative people to flourish. I'm happy to be living in this exiting times of the film industry even though production is way down, we are in times of change technically and creatively.

Finally!

Finally!

I am SO GLAD to see someone finally pick up the torch on this.. This product is one of the most useful tools I have purchased for my RED. It has not gotten NEAR enough notice in my opinion.

I have used it on about 6 jobs so far, and is has performed FLAWLESSLY. Not only that it saves time, and it saves money. The camera fits into the existing set workflow better by using all standard inputs/outputs.

For me the breakout box is the real unsung hero in the picture. A lot of the movies and projects I work on are mid-low budget and they cannot afford to make everything wireless. So we use a long DVI cable and run to a small cart which doubles as a sound / director's monitor / video village cart. This little breakout box allows us to connect everything we need to camera without EVER bothering the camera itself.

When it's time to move, the 1st AC only need detach the DVI cable from the camera, and he's free too move. Reconnecting it puts everyone, SOUND, TIMECODE, and VIDEO back online in a snap.

If you rent your camera professionally, then this product is truely a no-brainer.

If you have not tried one of these things out, you need to contact Anthony and make arrangements to do so.

A video was made both on RIP and RIB so check it out for detailed infromation.

Like the wonderful genius above, I do not work for ASLgear either, but I am a firm believer in their stuff.

Thanks for the kind comment Jay,

I agree the breakout box it the great unsung hero

Great post Tuto. . It just seems like the best product but nobody was talking about it; it's like, what's wrong with it, what am I missing? Glad to hear it's a goer.

I think it just took a little longer to come out than element technicas box and also its a bit more price but it does so much more, there really is nothing I can find wrong with this box, I think its great and makes your camera so much versital. Like its not an accessory its really a camera upgrade, it becomes a totally different camera after adding the RIP and RIB box

Hey Jay,
I'm sure RED has seen the RIP and RIB box combo, and I think thats why the new generation of RED cameras will have the in and out module with industry plugs and also the wifi remote control unit, as we see in the renderings they have shown us. But as we know everything is subject to change like RED say's. Everything is in development.

Well it may have something to do with the price... $4000 is more than some people want to spend on some connectivity convenience.

Apart from that, it certainly looks sweet.

Got to agree with Nils. $4000 buys a lot of other accessories which you can't work without!

We're proud to announce that the Air Sea Land RIP and RIB are now available for purchase through Abel Cine Tech. We've known designer Anthony Lenzo for years now and his products are top notch. There are a few more items in the works as well that look very interesting.

Not to mention a somewhat short lifespan for those moving to epic.

It does look and sound like a great piece(s) of kit though

I want to chime in here too. I've had both units for a couple of weeks and had to wait a bit for the install because we were working on a bunch of things and didn't have time to put it through its paces. At this point we have installed the main unit on the camera and have been using it for the past week. VERY NICE> I have to say it does make life easier not having to deal with the small connections on the RED. When doing a 2 camera shoot the remote function on the remote was great. It allowed me to operate 2 cameras at the same time with the confidence that everything looked great from one station. Build quality is very nice.

I'll try and post more later in the week.

I don't think it's as short as we believe.

Jay

Yes, but let`s say it`s even 1,5 years until they (scarlet/epic) were delivered - for lots of people that`s just too short for such a huge investment. A rental house I just told about the box declined, after hearing that price - then they`ll keep to cable adaptors...

I think it's a matter of how much use the camera gets, and the kind of works it's being put through.

If you end up on fairly large sets like I do, then this kind of equipment can go a long way towards more work in the future.

I've had people come up and say "Hey! is this a new RED?"

For some this will be a little pricey, but for a lot of people, this will be a fantastic thing.

The right tool for the right job.

It's funny what you said about that Rental house, in my experience, the Rental houses have been taking the EXACT OPPOSITE position than the one you spoke with.

They feel the fewer small parts that go out with their kit the better, and the more compatible and protected the camera the better. RIP and RIB are perfect for this.

Jay

Also remember that a lot of peoplewont have to budget to upgrade and all they will probably do upgrade the sensor in RED ONE.

I for myself am upgrading to epic,

But just a thought

The RIP is designed for and will only fit on the I/O side of the RED One. The RIB's (Break-out Box) design can be carried over to the next model cameras. Ideally (once we see the final system from RED), current RIP owners should only need to get the new panel and continue using the same RIB (Break-out Box).
