Ok I've been working with 2/3 inch cams forever. But I am new to this whole 35mm world. I'v played with Some 35mm adaptors but that's about it.

So any way really don't know what to do about lenses for the red( I such a Noob). I miss the good old days when a good old 16x zoom could do everything, and then rent the wideangles when needed.

I realize lenses are going to be a big part of the bidget. So any way to cover most situatuions I was thinking just get the 18-85mm and be done with it, but wait I'll want the 300 for those long shots. But what if I want something in between 300 and 85. The red zoom 50-150.
And were going in circles now.

I think the 18-85 might be a bit big for handheld.
What about primes, but what if I want to shoot Bourne style.
How about nikon I could get all the glass I need, but they suck.
Ziess nikon primes that would be great, but there is only 4 of them.

May some one can help understand how the 18-85 relates to a standard broadcast lens. Is a broadcast lens the equvilent of 30-300 lens in 35 land?:help:

I'm sorry I crazy I just have no Idea were to start.

What I would say to you, is most Projects are going to vary on the lenses they want to use. From cookes to zeiss to red lenses, whatever the choice. 2 options I see as viable.

1) Start with the 18-50mm. This will give you a little versatility and handheld capability. Rent everything else.

2) wait for the prime set and buy the 300mm. No real need for more then that. In the rare event you want to use zoom or some specific lens for the field you can rent and be done with it.

Hope this helps.

So Ideally I should buy all the red lenes.

Man I really love zooms maybe I need to hit the gym so I can heft the that 18-85. I'm thinking easyrig.

It all depends on the budget.

It all depends on the budget.

I go (depending on my budet) for Nkkor lenses as a start. You can buy those in any variety you like for nice prices on the second hand market. I allready had a few for my old Nikon and bought some extra recently, so now I have a 24, 50, 85, and a 135 with very low stops, and a very basic zoomlens with an aperture ring.
Results on reduser with Nikkor lenses were fine.
As soon as I can afford it Red Zoom Lenses will be my best option. Problem is that I'll have to buy more at once, because I'll have to change the mount.

A 35mm-format lens has a focal length approximately 2.5x that of a 2/3" video lens with an equivalent field of view.

So the Red 18-85mm would be the equivalent of a 7.2-34mm lens in 2/3" video. As a point of comparison, most standard video zooms start at a wide end of about 7.8mm and have around a 22x zoom ratio, so the long end is 172mm. This would be the 35mm equivalent of a 20-430mm lens!

Zoom lenses in 35mm cine format generally have smaller zoom ratios than those in 2/3" video, which necessitates multiple lenses to cover the same range of focal lengths that video shooters are used to covering with one lens (there are even commonly used broadcast lenses with 40x zoom ratios).
