  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

After Effects Secret menu

Correct me if I'm wrong, but AE doesn't use more than 2GB Ram...

You can select preferences/multiprocessing and use up to 8 cores with up to 2 Gigs of RAM assigned to each core.

Also, if you want to max out your system for REALLY fast renders, buy Gridiron Nucleo pro and use every ounce of power your computer has to render After Effects projects... Nucleo maxes out your CPU, but still only uses 2 Gigs of RAM per core.

Thanks alot for that tip!

I'm having trouble rendering a 3min 4k video to 1080p and keep getting memory crashes on my new Mac Pro 2009 8 core 12GB Ram beast of a computer!

I hope this will help by purging every 1 frame as i get memory crashes. Any advice on best format to export a final copy as in terms of high quality & performance safety?

Sorry if this is the wrong forum to post in.

It depends on how you're planning to use the material.
If you output quicktime or avi movie, the quality should be uncompressed.
If you output frame sequence (tga, dpx, etc) use max color depth.
The output resolution will be according to your final product.

This is very useful info for all of us who face memory & performance problems with AE.

Press CTRL + Alt + Shift buttons, keep pressing and --> Edit/Preferences/General
At the bottom you'll see "Secret".
Check "Disable Layer Cache"
Adjust "Purge Every 1 frame during make movie"

Voila! Memory clears every 1 frame, no memory problems.
Don't ask why a such piece of software has a secret menu.

I hope this helps
Chris

Tried this and it didn't work for me. What did work was:
1. Hold down SHIFT button
2. Mouse click EDIT - PREFERENCES - GENERAL
3. At this point you let go of the SHIFT key, not until this point though
and now you see the SECRET

Thats another way Shawn.
Great :)

Thanks Chris, I wouldn't even have known to look for a Secret menu if you hadn't posted. You have made my life simpler and that is always a bonus.
