  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Hi,

Any rumour or any update on what is developing at RED after Dragon???

:ihih::ihih:

I finally shot with a rented Dragon yesterday and I have to say, that although it was better in lalititude, I felt at the end of the day thinking I hade made the right decision not to upgrade my Epic. My Epic is good enough for my business until a new sensor arrives.

I hope the next sensor is not based on humongous resolutions but on cleaner and higher ISOs and expanded DR. 4K is enough for me

Yeah, technology that could benefits others would be shitty as you don't need it.

How much dynamic range do you want? What ISO? I'm really satisfied with Dragon's color, 16.5 stops of DR, and low light capabilities (clean ISO 2000 w/ the LLO OLPF).

A good roadmap for RED would be:

Drop Scarlet, lower Epic price. All focus on one camera, no internal conflicting interests between customer groups.

No re-buys or crazy rebates. You're a RED owner and want to upgrade your RED? Sell the other one yourself. RED expands user base, which in turn increases knowledge about system.

Current resolution is good. Overkill for film, but good for the stills side. Make the stills side work: should be possible to "mark" a point in the footage as a "still/photo moment". Handles can be included and user defined, e.g. a "photo" can be 24 frames of footage. These "photos" (including handles) should be easy to filter out and export as a new project.

Don't be greedy regarding sensor performance. Quality before quantity. Less PC overlocking mentality. More Apple/Mac "it just works" (not looking for a debate on this, just an illustration that everyone understands).

Look into auto focus systems similar to Canon Dual Pixel AF. Don't need it? Then don't use it.

Look into lowering prices on accessories and SSDs to bring them closer to actual part costs.

RED doesn't have to drop the Hollywood heritage, but it has become more of an INDIE/commercial owner operated camera. Align with that business. Grow it exponentially.

I own a Canon 1Dc. The RED system offers a few things compared to that camera. And brings many, many downsides. Make a camera I want to buy.

- Camera body with equal sensor 65mm with 10k resolution . Ready to shipments on the same days of the NAB 2015 :) :)
- New SSd at lower cost.
- New firmware / I WANT import a 3D LUT from Davinci :)
- Give more power to REDCINE-x, more GPU for rendering;)
- Wireless video module, integrated module +1, it would be fantastic.
- New Motion mount, with the possibility of not losing 1.5 stop immediately.
- New 65mm lenses RED PRIME ( size same Arri ultraprime ) :) :)

May be enough for now :) :) , color and resolution for now are the best thing I've seen on a digital camera on the market.

go RED ;)

if they want to dominate Hollywood they would go and be partner with Panavision and make great use for those Panavision 70 lenses.
for studio use and hollywood movies make rental only cameras.
Go with Fullframe only not creating another standart.Make SDI outputs etc. XLRs everything is pro level.I understand they had to build modular because of keep price lower than usual but this makes cameras only for beginners. Not perfectly ready to shoot on rental market.i love everything about Red Epic %99 perfect camera.only thing that bothers me is being handheld handicapped. It doesnt sit on your shoulder like it has to be.
Btw who needs 65mm or 650mm sensor? dont think %10 of Redusers owns medium format lenses.
Stick with full frame only and make camera perfect.( Epic is very close to being perfect at this moment)

8k sensor with PCIe based 1 TB media.

I would love to see a new sensor with cleaner ISO's, a camera with built-in ND's, ability to shoot ProRes internally, lower SSD costs, and to shoot 2k 300 FPS without windowing the sensor. Also a global shutter would be nice without using the motion mount. Love the Dragon's resolution, color and dynamic range though.

Personally, I think RED should expand its reach in the low budget/indie world. 4K/30p light weight camera based on Dragon that can do 60fps in 2K. Bring Redcode, the DR, color science all down into a nice little body for under $4,000. Aside from their next move in the high end world, I think this is something they should have done a long time ago. Something that the current Scarlet was supposed to address but never really did.

what about meizler module? :) (i know they cancelled this one)

Except for the price, you describe what the Scarlet already is.. I would love a Scarlet Dragon in a smaller body at 1/4 the price too, but to be honest, i don't see why should they do that...
Unless Panasonic and Sony bring a new "Raw video firmware" to their GH4 and A7S (which will probably happen according to some Panasonic dirigeant)....

I'd prefer that future sensors not try to cram so many pixels into them that there are sensitivity issues.

Even if you keep to the current density of photosites on the Dragon sensor (6144 pixels across 30.7mm), then a Full-Frame 36mm wide sensor shouldn't exceed 7.2K.

That's already similar to the 36MP Full-Frame Nikon D810, which is 7.4K across, and that's not considered a low-light camera. Compare that to the sensitivity of the Sony A7S, which is also Full-Frame but is only 4.2K across. And in between is the 22MP Canon 5D, which is 5.8K across.

So pushing for an 8K Red camera that is Full-Frame is great if you aren't interested in sensitivity, otherwise I would aim for something with fewer photosites.

People always would like to get more on everything. (except price lol:) )
Like best lowlight performance + more resolution + bigger sensor + high speed + more DR.

Something to compete against the GH5 and its family members. I'm done with heavy cinema Studio cameras for my Street & World Photography.
