  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

After a year of bitching about it, Ive moved to the dark side.

Keywording is a major pain. Imagine keywording 5000 clips? And those are the ones you used. I like the option having it but I don't personally use it much. I do keyword bloopers.

Attaching keywords in FCP-X is very flexible, powerful and very can be leveraged; you can apply keywords in a variety of ways and to many sets and subsets of clips at once.

You do know that there is a preference setting where you can let FCPX make a Keyword Collection for every folder you drag in from the Finder in the Event?
In that way, if you have your footage organised in folders, like most do, if you drag it in, you have the same organisation as in your finder, except for the subfolder approach, although you can also make folders in your Event, and subfolders. They can only contain keyword collections though, not clips itself.

So what's then the difference with Bins? Not a lot, just a different icon/name. And, IMO, more flexibility with Keyword Collections.

Added flexibility of fastly keywording just ranges and giving clips/ranges multiple keywords. And you can do this *very* fast (with shortcuts, dragging with the mouse, ...), and making smart collections, ...
In my opinion, the whole keywording concept is one of the most genial in FCPX and one truly for modern media, and an area where FCPX really beats other NLE's.

Marketing. Do you think Evan schechtman moved their post over to FCPX because he wanted to have a rinky dink article on the apple website?

did you watch this presentation he did, explaining why they needed it, and the benefits in a large heavy post environment?

David,

A video on Apple's website extolling the virtues of one of their products falls firmly under the marketing banner, regardless of who is in it. No question about it.

And yes, I watched that presentation when it was first released. I also have a great deal of respect for Radical Media. From memory, Evan stated a number of times he might be wrong about the software and that much needed to be implemented. Lots has been implemented, so I'm interested in knowing if any post-houses have embraced the software. I'm not looking to debate the software, I own it. There's no need to act like some sort of gatekeeper for discussions on this subject. It was a simple question...

Liam, you first you are limiting the notion of "professional". I use it "professionally" for commercial work - long form documentary, drama, ads, music videos, corporates etc etc

Second, can you be more specific about the functions that you are referring to? Exporting XML, OMF etc?

Sorry Rob, I missed your reply.

I'm not suggesting people working on FCPX aren't professional, that was poorly worded by me. I'm interested in teams working together with FCPX; companies with multiple edit suites, multiple jobs and editors who need to send audio to the dubbing suite, FX to the graphics guys etc.

FCPX has been an ongoing debate with a client of mine over the last couple of years and the announcement of the new Mac Pros and the "major" update to FCPX has only increased their interest.

David,
This forum really does get tedious when people like you act like some sort of gatekeeper for discussions on this and other subjects. It was a simple question...

Thanks, what other subjects? I think I have been a pretty solid contributor here, mostly trying to help others. One thing I don't tend to do is get personal.

I'm no gatekeeper, I might have strong beliefs, but I, like you am entitled to them.

David, I edited that reply, as I thought it was a bit harsh. Too much coffee.

None in Los Angeles that I know of. And there are a lot of reasons for that, but basically, what FCPX offers is not what post houses - which, by definition, are finishing houses - need. For all of its strengths as an offline or creative editor, here are just a few things it doesn't do that post houses need:

Create EDL's
Create change lists
Offer a simple way to play the conformed timeline against the offline
Import, play, or export frame based sequences (DPX, Open EXR, etc.)
Import, play, or export Avid media
Allow for a relatively automated conform of an Avid-cut sequence, including keyframes
Allow for painting and tracking effects (I know, Motion does, but not nearly with the precision and flexibility of programs like Smoke, Flame, Nuke, etc.)
Control or play out to VTR's (yes, that's still quite necessary in today's world)

In our world (studio level television and feature post production), Avid is very dominant in the cutting room. For FCPX to make any serious inroads into post houses, it must play well with that. At this point in time, it doesn't.

Right now the facilities who are embracing X, seem to be small commercial shops and some trailer houses. This includes LA. For the most part it seems to be as an island within an overall facility, mainly where one editor is allowed to experiment or where the owner is a real pro-Apple person.

I'm currently at the front end of a RED-shot feature (low budget, indie) that I'm cutting in X. I'm on Day 1, so I can weigh in a few months down the road to discuss the pros and cons. So far the arsenal includes FCP X, Motion, Compressor, Xto7, 7toX, SyncNLinkX, EDL-X, X2Pro, Better Renamer and a few more. Maybe Resolve, too. Not that I will need all of these items, but that gives me what I need to come close to Media Composer's level of interoperability.

Looking forward to hearing your findings Oliver.

Please share them here at REDUSER as well as CREATIVECOW ;)

Is there a way to adjust the proxy/optimize media settings? For example, I think optimized defaults to regular ol' prores, but is there a preference or hack to make it ProRes 4444 or HQ?

Also, anyone know if you can (or how to) use actual LUTs (.cube, 3dl, mga... anything)?

I believe optimize follows the render settings, but I'll have to double-check. Proxy is half-sized, ProResPROXY.

LUT's - google is your friend

http://blog.abelcine.com/2012/06/21/applying-luts-to-log-footage-in-fcp-premiere-avid-and-resolve/

Optimized media defaults to the best it can get out of what is being input.

"Optimized media is almost always ProRes 422. The exception being when transcoding RED RAW which is ProRes 4444.Proxy media is always ProRes Proxy."

You can generate your own proxies using something else and through them into the proxy folder. I have tested this with putting samurai footage in the proxy folder.

Great tip Bob.

I guess keep the naming the same so they link up with original?

What bout Proxies generated at DIT side of things?

Never knew this. Very good to know.

Any source files will work as long as they are names the same.

And in your experience the naming part only works with the Samurai correct?

I had the HyperDeck in mind :)

Thanks again Bob!

Yeah I guess it's trickier with the hyperdeck but it can be done. I will preface and say I don't really bother with proxies as I can edit fine using the RED file directly. I would consider using proxies for when using multicam though.
