  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

After a year of bitching about it, Ive moved to the dark side.

Hehe, like David I got some hate mail over just saying that FCPX has some nice features. I also trashed it in the beginning as well, not because I didn't like what Apple had done with it, just because it was incomplete at launch. Anyway, it's a great piece of software and it's a shame that more people don't give it a real chance.

Remember, we have been told that a major update for FCPX will launch along with the new Mac Pro. Speaking of which, a lot of people still keep complaining about the design of the new Mac Pro... Whatever. I think Apple is really on to something good here. Let the hate mail flow, I don't mind. ;)

hahahahaaa... you make me laugh out loud sometimes man ! And I seriously admire the knowledge you bring to this forum.

A major FCPX upgrade and a new MACPRO... all at the same time. Im going to have to wear 3 sets of Undies that day. :)

I agree, Jeff, I'm actually super excited about the new MacPro. At first, I was a little put off by the lack of CUDA support, but I think with a new FCPX and the new MacPro, I'll have all the horsepower I need and plenty of throughput. In a little cylinder. What they are doing to cool the system with this design is really innovative. Looking forward to it. It feels like it has been a long time since I'm been excited about a new computer purchase....

That new Mac Pro is going to be the first of several beasts they release in the coming years. My 2008 is still chugging along and will still be useful for a few years to come.

I can't wait for that new Mac!

I'm sure the new features in FCP x are going to be great as well.

for those in this thread looking for training, both Ripple and Larry Jordon are excellent starting points.

Larry Jordan had answers to a few questions.

Ketch,

how so?

All you have to do now is import the r3d then create proxy media to edit, and the select best quality to finish. R3D can not be integrated any better than it is right now. You even have most of the RCX tools right at your fingertips within FCP x, so if you have to change clip settings mid edit, you can.

I can't see how r3d can be more integrated than it is now.

Well, I know I do need to take the time and learn it right, even if it is to edit some small personal projects, but when I go from Adobe PP to FCPX it seems some how there is always something missing, but as I said, not been a pro user, I won't go too far in expressing anything further till I learn it well enough, which I will now take the time to do, since once back in LA, I'll have several small projects awaiting that I could easily do my self, leaving the Pro editors to do the big ones for me.

PS: All the little I learned for all software programs I have done at Lynda.com, but we'll look forward to get some serious training once back in LA.

Good to hear. Personally I love FCPX. Its the first editor that I have seen that just looks really "nice" and artistic. Was always frustrated in Premiere that it was clumpsy to just move clips around, not so in FCPX. However I do miss a few big things in FCPX.
- Syncing sound, uggh, causing me great grief right now. Still trying to figure out how a pipeline that actually works.
- Exporting sound to ProTools. Ugghhh again.
- Do not like that the proxies are so big. Darn I have 1TB of proxies for our WildlifeRescue movie. More settings here would help a lot
- Very scary with the projects, sometimes they just get corrupt and it only has ONE backup of them. So if you dont backup yourself often you are out of luck
- Its very fast in many ways, moving back and forward but the library is clunky and slow to scroll in. Hope they optimize it, would make it much more fun to work with. I think its loading the thumbnails that is keeping it down.

Best

Ketch,

if you get the ripple training you can load them on your ipad and watch them on the plane. I've edited thousands of hours for broadcast in my career and I have to say that this software rocks.

i hope you are not going to LA for good! We would miss you here in Italy.

The big question is, will the broadcast world leave Avid for FCPX in the futur?

The thing about learning this programme is to go deep - no half arsed measures. You have to fully commit to it. I spent about a month living and breathing it obsessively and it has paid off - books, online tutorials, youtube crap, Larry Jordan (who is hiliarious) and others. It is all worth investigating and drinking in. It is also best to learn the different functions in specific structured workflows - much easier to remember. Finally, I cant stress enough the importance of learning the keyboard shortcuts.

Like others, I cant wait for the new mac pro as well. However, it does actually work quite well on my 2008 Mac Pro right now - sounds like I have similar model to you David. The workflow for working with Red Footage is very nice - transcoding to proxies and then linking back up again at the end.

Quick question:

How many of you raving about FCPX are professional editors working in a professional editing environment, working with and collaborating with other professionals? I totally get FCPX for a single user, but I'm not so sure about its capabilities in a busy post-house.

Liam, you first you are limiting the notion of "professional". I use it "professionally" for commercial work - long form documentary, drama, ads, music videos, corporates etc etc

Second, can you be more specific about the functions that you are referring to? Exporting XML, OMF etc?

The bigger question is really how long will the broadcast world really be around? Avid is is rough financial shape and they have always been extraordinarily proprietary, limiting, IMHO creativity. (I mean in terms of how you could import things and such, and I am not talking about now, but when fcp was initially introduced in the 90's)

some companies want to spur progress and some wan to limit it. I have not seen a shred of editing innovation from AVID since maybe version 5.5 of media composer. It's the same editor, based on a source record model, that comes from tape.

I really feel we needed this new direction. Less hindrance.

I'd call this a professional environment, no?

its the big houses that needed this transition the most.

There have been a million of these threads here on reduser.

I don't want to derail marks thread, which was created to tell people how he has come to accept this software with a red workflow.

the fact is that it is actually a very nice way to work, alone or interfacing with the rest of the world.

No one piece of software evr made me a better editor, but this one made my work in an edit room easier.

David

I don't want to start a polemic either.
Personaly I work on the platform my client want me to edit on, end of the story.
It can be what ever they use, it is just an editing tool at the end.
Anyway Mark and David you are reminding me I have to give a try to FCPX one day.
Just need to find the time for it.
Cheers
B.

Thanks David, I'll look them up and see to get a full training course.

I'll be back and forth from and to LA and Italy with several projects still to be partially shot in both places.

EDIT:

Okay David, since you suggested, I just went to their site, and is a bit confusing, which training lessons would you recommend I buy?

I want to start fresh, putting in my back all that I know, that very little that I know that is, and begin with some one you think is good, form the start, so to not mix and match various workflows presented by different teachers.

And in my experience with Lynda.com at times you get some one teaching a lesson and leaving important stuff behind, or can't find lessons from the beginning teaching the basics for such a program, and they of to a different version of it, yet not touching important basis of it, and I'll be trying to go back and forth form lesson to lesson to see if I can find all the info to put the puzzle together, I hate that!!

I look for a training series that goes from start to end!!

What I mean is that if I get this: http://www.rippletraining.com/categ...ials/final-cut-pro-x-tutorials/apvs-fcpx.html And then this: http://www.rippletraining.com/categ...x-advanced-editing-workflows-2nd-edition.html

Will it teach me all that I need to know from scratch to end?

Thanks buddy
