  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

After a year of bitching about it, Ive moved to the dark side.

Oh, I thought that all pro features where missing. Didn't take a look at it since it originally came out.

So does OMF export, EDL export and XML export for Davinci work as it should?

Good to hear Mark, even so I am not an Editor neither would I ever want to be one, (I already spend way too much time in front of a computer writing and stuff) but I do have both the Adobe Production suit and FCPX, and playing around with both, I have found strait away that the FCPX UI is some what easier to move around and go about, I would dare say more intuitive, and even so I went back and forth with PP and wanted to like it better, because of been using Photoshop for so many years, I just could't and now I never open any of the Adobe programs other then Photoshop.

So now I just hope that the next thing coming for the FCPX will be an even greater platform with more r3d integration.

No, I don't think so. It does FCPXML (proprietary shit?), which DaVinci supports though.

Ketch,

how so?

All you have to do now is import the r3d then create proxy media to edit, and the select best quality to finish. R3D can not be integrated any better than it is right now. You even have most of the RCX tools right at your fingertips within FCP x, so if you have to change clip settings mid edit, you can.

I can't see how r3d can be more integrated than it is now.

6. Hate the magnetic storyline feature. I tend to put a blank "Gap" and put footage on top of it. I can always cut the gap and move things around if I must.

I've been doing this too since I never could wrap my head around the magnetic timeline but was wondering if I was screwing myself by working this way. Makes it a little more like working in the old FCP7. Someone care to show me the folly of my ways?

One thing I wish they'd get right is audio syncing. Why can't I sync with timecode this way but if I make a multi cam clip it defaults to syncing with timecode?

Want to get rid of The magnetic timeline? Just use the "P" key and fcp x acts just like fcp 7 or any other "old school" NLE

It exports EDL and it's own brand of XML. Via FCPXML the round trip to Resolve is a piece of cake and with the new Logic X you can import projects for editing directly in Logic, or export AAF or OMF from there, with the caveat that Logic X is in it's first incarnation and integration isn't as tight as it could be; Every clip is imported as a discreet track, so you have to work around it.

Looks like the FCPX OMF export problem may be fixed by sending the fcpxml to Logic pro X and then exporting the OMF from there. Has anyone tried this yet?

It's got the best colour corrector out there (for and edit suite) its amazing !

Really? Has color grading changed much since launch? I remember trying the color tools as one of the first things when I got my hands on it, and being WAY less than impressed by them. They seemed like the 3 Way Color Correct from FCP7 with a different interface. Masking was horrible, tracking nonexistent . . .

I've been on the cusp of going back and giving FCPX a decent go anyway, but I wasn't going to do so for the color tools.

Sounds good. I hate the EDL/XML roundtrip from Premiere to Resolve. I´ll jump aboard as soon as OMF is implemented.

Suggestions for good online tutorials & training for FCPX .

Looked at Lynda but they only have one dated 2011.

It's not a "proprietary shit". Anyone can open it up with a standard text application and see what's inside. It's still an XML, just in different format from FCP7. And it works perfectly with Resolve.

Aaaa... what? What's wrong with EDL/XML roundtrip between PPro and Resolve? And what does OMF has to do with Resolve?

Not by a long mile. The best color corrector inside the stand alone editor, BY FAR, is the Baselight inside the Avid. It's all GPU accelerated, has the same planar-type unlimited trackers as Resolve, it's controlled by a real panel- MC Color, Log grading, has the still store, it has Truelight capabilities, it's multilayered etc. In other words, it's the closest thing to the Baselight without actually getting the real Baselight.
FCPX... please...

I defer to you on that one Jake but to be fair, we can probably chalk that remark up to the now famous Toia enthusiasm. I don't put much stock in it, nor do I hold it against him ;-)

I know I had nothing to do with it.

But do you trust mea little more now?

when it clicks in, it really is easy to see how it opens up possibilities.

I have taken so much crap for liking FCPX from the get go. Even got some hate mail.

Good to see you gave it another try.

David

hehehe :) You were right all along mate.

Hate mail is a bit harsh

Yes don't put much stock in it, Im a Resolve man, But still amazed with the quality of colour with such simple tools. For quick grades, Im more than happy to use it. I just finished TVC last night with it... I usually would have sent the project to my resolve, but thought what the hell, Lets see how much I can push this little grading tool around before it bogs down and starts annoying me.
14 masks (with key frames) 5 colour keys, 15 colour corrections later (on a single shot) ... And it did it quick and easily, and played back in real time. I then put the same shot into Resolve and pretty much replicated what I did in FCPX in about 1/2 the time (due to better tools) but the fact is, FCPX could manage quite well if you had too...

But yes Scott & Jake. Its never going to match or replace a dedicated colouring suite. :) So to all the worried colourists out there, be calm, your still safe for now. :)

Mark I had a very similar experience. I just cannot think of going back now. I feel like St Paul who so hated the Christians and then became one of them! I committed myself to learning all the key stroke commands early. It is also an excellent way of starting afresh, losing all the bad habits I had acquired in FCP 7.
