  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

After a year of bitching about it, Ive moved to the dark side.

Could be anywhere in the world today.
After a year or 2 of bitching about it, Ive moved to the dark side with FCPX

Being an Old Avid man, moving to FCP7 10 years ago was a great move, faster, smoother, easier... then decide to hit premier CS6 pretty hard due to its R3D work flow and flirted with FCPX.
Gave Avid another try... sadly it hasn't advanced at all in the last decade, Such a slow arse thing, Im surprised its still on the market. But Im glad I learnt in AVID, as it was great 15 years ago.... but just hasn't advanced, Sadly its dead for me now.

FCP7 still is a great program but sadly no future. No RAW support, its dying..

Premier CS6 had me, had me good, Had me because I could edit 5k R3D's.. WOW !, * months ago I thought Cs6 Prem was the editor i would stay with for the rest of my career.... But after the last 6 months of using it, I realised it was an old clunky interface on a destructive time line, If you moved a clip up and across, you lost your audio tracks which did not drop down a layer to suite... Its a poor cousin to FCP7, Constantly double handing of files and the more you hammered CS6 the hotter the processors worked, the slower the machine got.. The clunkly old style editing soon wore thin with me.
What was I going to do..

So off I go again for more FCPX trials, HATE HATE HATED IT !!!!!.. 4 attempts over the last 12 months, but for the life of me I could not get my head around it, clips shuffling around everywhere... So i went back to Premier, got the shits again with the slow clumsy old style features, and shit grading tools, but looooved the way I could send shots seamlessly across to after effects.
So then back I go to good old FCP7.. oooh I love FCP7.. but Ive lost my 5k R3D workflow ??? FUCK !

Ok.. 5th time, back to FCPX... Hating it...! Ok, lets give this a proper go. Lets edit a real 5k job on it... Lets not dick around, lets do the tutorials from start to finish, give this thing a chance as I did with AVID, FCP7 and Prem CS6.

4 days later... WOW!!!!!!!! Hang on, It's all starting to make sense, It's all starting to click together.

Figured it out !!! Thank gooooooood ! and now its starting to blow me away. I wanted to hate this thing so bad, I bashed it in blogs, I slayed APPLE !! in the forums... but now I have to openly apologise.
Its the real fricken deal.
All I had to do is spend a good week on it to really nut out every single feature, every little + & - , really peel back its layers of bullshit, completely understand it back to front. (As you should)

Ive just edited my first project on it in half the time I would have spent on FCP7 and Avid, Even final graded in it from the RAW files, It's got the best colour corrector out there (for and edit suite) its amazing ! 4k masters look amazing ! ... Works with black magic thunderbolt extreme perfectly. All I need now is a RR-x thunderbolt2 for my lappy and I'll be really flying.

I have to say, to all the FCPX haters out there. (and I was one of the worst) Spend some real time with it, and it will impress you. Especially people who think Premier Rocks, FCPX eats it for speed and power by a long shot.

Anyways...

Just sharing my week. :)

Good news. Can't wait to see how it performs when the new Mac Pro arrives.

Welcome!

My own relationship with it is still one of love and hate. Maybe going forward you can teach us all some new tricks.

Ain't change a bitch?

I know I had nothing to do with it.

But do you trust mea little more now?

when it clicks in, it really is easy to see how it opens up possibilities.

I have taken so much crap for liking FCPX from the get go. Even got some hate mail.

Good to see you gave it another try.

David

Mark - I'd only disagree with one thing... "dark side," bah - now you've moved into the LIGHT!!

It was a shit application when it was released or atleast lacking some really important features to be usefull. No io support and no red support etc. They released it to early. But i liked the first demovideo and would try it out for sure after it got red support. Only problem, im a pc user now. Too tired to wait for new macpros. Would be interesting to try it. Multicam seams super simple on it. Still having hard time trusting apple after such weak release. More transparency like adobe and they could win alot back.

How is the red support? Better than premiere or about the same?

+1..but I liked something about it since the beginning, and was sold to it since the R3d support and the RR. Premiere Pro never stopped to be buggy here, always had issues in the middle of a project. But I still love all the other Adobe apps.

After all my frustration with Premiere, I think it's time to go back to Final Cut also. Well maybe after the Mac Pro comes out and when my CC subscription ends.

Will wait 'til I get my Mac Pro

Love it but issues...

Love it but issues...

I'm a huge fan of FCP-X but there are things that annoy me.

After choosing to learn it and edit my feature film "Symphony Dark" on it, I've seen some huge quirks.

Mind you, I did have an extensive storyline (aka timeline) which included a 4096x2160 resolution, 5 camera formats (Red Scarlet/Epic, Canon 5D, Canon 60D, Sony FS100, Sony ex3, Contour) & multiple audio samples. I had over 4000clips in the storyline and 6tb of footage for a 1hr40min film. Sure I might have been pushing some sort of envelope.

Here are my recommendations:

1. Always make copies of the project file.
If your project gets corrupted it may take forever to load (we're talking hours like 4 in my case)! Even if you try duplicating the project (by FCPX internally or simply copy paste in the finder), it will duplicate the corruption. Only way to fix a corrupted project is to "select ALL" and paste into a new project storyline. NOTE: If it's a big storyline, it will not copy it and trying to copy half at a time is insanely a pain.

2. Try to avoid having multiple Events for one project. You're screwed without all the events and there is no point in separating the clips unless they won't all fit on one drive.

3. Make sure the file names are different before importing into an Event. You'll save lots of headaches later.

4. Avoid "Compounding (aka nesting) clips". They will slow down the process.

5. Turn off the auto render. It slows you down and won't render while you work (which defeats the purpose). Sometimes, render all will stop. Turn on auto render if that happens and stop working.

6. Hate the magnetic storyline feature. I tend to put a blank "Gap" and put footage on top of it. I can always cut the gap and move things around if I must.

THE BIGGEST PAIN: I love FCPX but if you're working as a team...
I'm not sure how flexible it is passing back and forth. For example: I had to assign the audio a role (so that I could export each character's own individual soundtrack) to give to the sound folks. That meant clip by clip assigning/separating it for 38 speaking characters!! Would have been nicer to drag each audio to their own track in the old days but now it sucks going clip by clip.

Anyhow, Not a fan of Premiere.

Heheheh... yeah I do remember the good old "R3D support 4 FCPX" thread :)

Mark, would you please share what made you turn around? Which tutorials did you watch?

I have some friends to enlighten :) maybe your way will help them, too? :)

I was going to jump on the Adobe bandwagon until their subscription only shenanigans. I refuse to support such bad behavior. When I get m new Mac, I will take a serious look at Final Cut X. Little worried about it not playing nice in a group setting, although most my work I do myself. Do you think Smoke will be fast enough on the new Macs to be usable? The tool set is amazing. It costs more, but it works well with FCP X and if it could save time compositing, it may be worth the cost.

Some things about it I really like, others I hate. It's audio is still not up to snuff... But it's auto audio-linking is so easy (which is ironic because it's aforementioned audio situation). I can't export the shit I want. Hoops and more hoops, 3rd party band-aid solutions... guugh... what's taking them so long?

It's proxy implementation slays though (Macbook Air editing - 11", not even 13" - sure, why not!) Just so dead simple/easy. And it's $350!? What?
