AF100 v Scarlet No way

Quote from Jeff Kilgroe:
"IMO, the Sony NEX-VG10 is a better buy than the AF100.

The VG10 lacks zebras and peaking. IMO, two of the biggest problems with DSLR video is that it's usually out-of-focus and overexposed, so including those features on the VG10 would have taken it a step further towards being a video cameras as we all know and love them.

Are you really going to run any form of pro-level sound and then feed it into XLRs on the camera only so the audio can be compressed or re-sampled?

Audio on the AF100 is 48-kHz/16-bit Linear PCM, so long as you record in PH mode. It is Dolby AC-3 in lower bitrate recording modes.

If the fixed lens is 7.5MM at the widest, the Scarlet would make a great jib camera; that's an equivalent to a 15MM or so on a Red. If the image quality cuts well with Red, it's a bargain price with all the remote controls built in.

Get ready for 2,000 posts on this very issue..if Scarlet can intercut w/ Red.

Didn't realize that it didn't have zebras... Hehe. the more I learn about the VG10, the more I realize how much it sucks. Although, I can say the same for the AF100. I'm still trying to figure out why people are so attracted to it. If for no other reason than needing an external recorder to get a decent image out of it to work with, making it a $6500 camera before you even put a lens on it and bumping it up in price enough to where other options are available to be considered.

And does it pass the external audio via the HD-SDI and/or HDMI? I guess what I'm trying to figure out, is if most people are talking about recording to an external box, why run audio through the camera at all? If you're using the onboard mic and recording from the HDMI or HD-SDI, then the audio is imbedded, no? My point with the VG10 and lack of XLRs is that I would just feed audio into the external recorder anyway. Do people really want the XLR inputs on AF100 for the purpose of recording primary audio? These cameras lack so much as it is, more so with the VG10, we're really at a point of just shrugging it off and accepting that we're just using the camera as the imaging head and nothing else anyway.

I wouldn't say that- you're using everything but the codec. You're using the chip, you're using the lenses, you're using the onboard controls and the viewfinder/monitor, etc. The AF is way more user friendly than a 5D M2 or 7D for video and as long as you bypass the codec and go out to a KiPro or a Nanoflash you get a pretty amazing image for still nowhere near as much money as a RED One. Is it better than a Scarlet- well only by virtue of being on the market sooner. And that- like it or not- is a huge factor.

VG10 or AF100 are no way to waste money for me but GH2 could be the best interim VDSLR kind of camera (with no moire/aliasing image) till Scarlet/Epic thing ships.

Read more about GH2 at the link below:

Tester13: “The GH2 is the best (disastrous) camera for video shooters!”>>>

Also I'll add to that extraordinary photo/video camera a couple of new 4/3 lenses (fast Leica D 25mm f/1.4, Panasonic 20mm f/1.7,)

also Tokina 11-16mm, Nikon 14-24mm, Leica R 28-90mm, Leica R 80-200mm,...)

Ki Pro Mini ProRes CF recorder, SoundDesign MixPre, Rode NTG3, my own mix-parts assembled handheld rig,

Vocas MateBox, Format & Hoya filters, Arri MF1 follow focus, GlideCam 4000 Pro, Manfrotto Fig-Rig, Kessler Cineslider,

Lightweight Fluid Heads and tripods from Gitzo and Libec, ...

all hardware and accessories that I can use with Scarlet or Epic later...

Scarlet will have HDMI output, correct?
Could we use this with a Scarlet??

What I've seen so far, this is HDSLR quality, and a crappy codec. I'm sure it's convenient to shoot, with better features, and you could spend thousands more on a better recorder. But...

The blown highlights are there. Not filmlike to me.

If I had a choice of HDR RAW vs. H264 / blown highlights -- that's no choice at all really.

Everything else is rather unimportant to me.

Oh yeah, throw in 150 fps.

What make you think it will not have alias/moire?

There will not be an OLFP, like on the AF100.

Tester13 (Vitaliy Kiselev) is the hacker that patched the GH1/GF1 camera software said on DVXUser Forum:

"Aliasing, I did not see any during test filming. I filmed check shirts and horizontal lines and they looked good."

hope that is true... would be a big step forward.

I wonder if he had the 2.8 tele convertor mode on.... which should lead to zero aliasing/moire and turn the camera into a 1/2" cam.

All I know is I'll be actually shooting on my AF-100 after the first of the year and will have several projects in the can before Scarlet comes out.

it is so strange comparing two cameras that do not even exist just now. we write about them as if the cameras (not the prototypes) are out and we are using them daily!

That's not exactly true- no one has really shot with a Scarlet outside of RED's labs. And a final version has not been shown yet nor a shipping date or price fixed.

A near final version of the AF100 has been in many folks' hands recently for testing and independent test footage- with a December 27, 2010 shipping date and $4,995 set as the price. Makes a difference.

Yes Scarlet has an HDMI output on the brain, EPIC has both HDMI and HD-SDI outputs on the brain.

HDMI is a more flexible output than HD-SDI; it supports higher frame rates at larger frame sizes at deeper bit depths.

So yes, a product like the above could be used, although the internal REDCODE recording capability of Scarlet is still superior.

this is soooo hard to take and it is not fair that one has to make such decisions. The Scarlet sound so good and the specs are just superb. And yet, how long must we wait? Personally I must buy a camera in the beginning of next year so I am going to hold on till then and make an educated choice when the time comes. TIll then I just keep checking on all the cameras available.

Just a thought, but the AF100 is pretty cheap and much of your extra stuff works for Scarlet as well, so you could pick up an AF100, shoot with it until Scarlet appears, then sell it with very little loss.

Good shooting and best regards,

Leo

that is what I have in mind for the moment. But these days, two months is a long time in this business and other cameras might surface. Also I am still waiting to get my hands on an AF100 to see if it feels right.

Yeah, but then you're waiting for some other camera that isn't out yet, and by the time that one comes out, some other swanky camera has been announced.

In any case, by waiting to shoot until a new camera comes out, you are either putting off making money or putting off valuable time that could be spent learning (in preparation to make money, of course).
