Hello All,

After 2 days at NAB, Matt (camera operator) and I decided to head down to California and try and film some surfing. We only had one day to get what we could before we had to head back to Colorado. Needless to say it was a beautiful day and the only thing that could of made it better was the waves being bigger or our car not getting broken into wile we were eating lunch and reviewing the surfing footage (Laptops, cameras and hard drives gone :embarassed:

Hope you enjoy the video
Bill

Hi Joshua and Jay,

Thank you! Ive been doing this for nearly 10years and although ive filmed a bunch of action sports, i have always been land locked and not able to film something that has been on my bucket list since the beginning, SURFING!

This was our first shot at it and we only had 3 hours to film, I just hope i get a call one day to film Mavricks, Jaws or any other massive wave. This was all shot 2man FPV style and if given a big enough wave, ive always thought about trying to put my hell in the barrel. (Ill just put the camera in a water proof housing and let the sponsors take care of the rest if the ship goes down :001_cool:

This whole octocopter scene is gonna blow action sports filming wide open.

If you ever bring your kit over to Europe, i can show you some crazy waves

Jay,

Ive been saying the whole RC aerial is going to blow up for the past 10years! The funny thing is, the first company i started was "UAV Imagery" and most people thought i sold sunglasses :undecided: so i changed the name to Got Aerial.. its come pretty far and now its coming down to whos the best pilot and can get the best shots.

Just curious, with RC aerials these days, are you concerned with FAA restrictions?

Thanks

Hi Tony,

Concerned in what way? I have been working with the FAA for the better part of 8years and provided my services to primary government agencies. The FAA will be coming out with a provisionally set of rules in the next couple of months which everyone will get to ask questions and the FAA is legally required to answer before coming out with the definitive rules in about a year or so.

It looks like you have a RC heli as well and are providing commercial aerial services. What are your thoughts?

This looks great! Sorry to hear about your car getting broken into, it spoils a great day of footage you acquired.

The value of the stock footage might offset your worries. I see your in Miami and maybe next year we will film ultra again and if we do you should come by and check it out

Hey Bill. Will definitely be interested in getting together! My day job is in Real Estate actually and always wanted to get into aerial filming of condominium buildings but read about the FAA regulations regarding that and just figured I would wait until that all got sorted out in the future.

Looks awesome, those waves actually aren't that bad for Manhattan Beach. But like Samir said, I'd definitely think twice before I even decided to fly my camera over the water, but I've never flown a camera on an octo, I guess it shows how confident you are in your flying.

So you're the reason Ultra has their aerials?? Most of my work is with EDM Dj's. Would love to meet up next time you're in South Florida. I'll be upgrading to EPIC soon and would love to see my baby fly haha.

Hi Marc,

Im sorry and i can see how my statement was misleading, let me clarify.

I contacted the Ultra crew about 5months ago which came down to talking with Remco (i think i spelled his name right) . basically they didnt have aerial in the budget and could only afford the plane ride from CO and a hotel stay for the whole 10days, but no actual pay for our work. Unfortunatly we could not accept the offer due to paying gigs.

So what i was meaning to say is that next year is always a possibility if im not so financially strapped or if Ultra is willing to kick down some cash for the work.

I have already shot at "Global Dance Festival" and Krewella was a blast to shoot.

Hi Owen,

Thank you. Im not sure what i can do about the quality on your phone, any ideas?

Bill

Yeh not sure mate, i'm still trying to learn the best ways to compress for web delivery... Some videos just look really crisp on iphones but yours just fell apart... Love the footage though. I tried learning to fly RC a while back... its an art i'll give you that :)... i failed, crashed and burned too many times!
