  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

AE rendering black frames

I've seen strange things in AE. Sometimes it's just a matter of saving, quitting, relaunching or copying and pasting to a new composition or modifying settings slightly and trying again. In other words, there are always going to be small bugs here and there that few find simply because they require very specific conditions. If you modify those conditions, the likelihood of resolving the problem is pretty high.

I've had the same thing with EX3 footage in After Effects (it would render black frames every second or so if you put any kind of effect or mask on a clip). Annoyingly I had to render out intermediates of every file - but for RED footage that's probably not really a practical solution.

You say you're using proxies.. Are you using the QT pointers/proxy references to the R3Ds? If so, they seem to be problematic on occasion with AE, compressor and a few others, not sure what to offer up as a solution other than to transcode out to an intermediate format -- as Stephen said.

If you're in CS4 and loading the R3D files directly (highly recommended over using the proxies), then you should check your R3D settings. Make sure OLPF compensation is set to OFF! If it's enabled, it will usually render black frames.

Thanks for the responses. I used the R3D files, but the colorspace (rec709) still made me have to push the color grading a lot compared to the proxies (still very milky looking) The proxies look better, but I assume I am missing something with the R3D's. In my understanding, aren't the proxies just a quicktime wrapper for the R3D's?

I actually started with the R3D's. I keyed the footage, graded it, and then it rendered empty frames (what?). So that is when I switched to the proxies, and liked the way they looked better. Then the proxies rendered black frames (arggg).

I will try turning the OLPF compensation off and see if that will help the R3D's. Any suggestions on getting the R3D's looking more like the proxies in AE?

Did you change all the settings for color management according to Adobe's manuals for R3D files?

I've not seen a manual from Adobe. I've only read articles on how to change the color space to REC709. I've searched adobe.com & red.com, but I've come up with nothing. Know where I can find it?

OLPF compensation was the culprit for me. If I have it turned on and try to render in full frame, full quality I get the black frames. As soon as I turn off OLPF compensation everything appears to work fine.

Use some very subtle unsharp masking in the end to compensate for it.

Hi.
I have to bump this thread.. I shot on the RED ONE MX with 4K 29.976 fps (interpreted to 25fps) and AE is rendering black frames, about every 10th frame.
I am on AE CS6. Is there a fix for that?

Thnx

found a workaround.
go to "interpret footage" and pick another pixel aspect ratio.... after that switch back to your starting aspect ratio ...
