  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Advice please steadicam up to 1K?

From my experience I'm not sure you can get something in that price range that will work well. I haven't tried the eBay variety though.
The Glidecam 4000 Pro with an X-10 arm/vest can be had for just over $2K. This setup can be quite good with a few teaks.

Take a look at my post here for some samples:

P.S. I'm assuming you mean that you want to fly a Red EPIC or Scarlet.

Real Steadicams costs around $60K!
The cheapest and still professionaly usable solution would be the Zephyr from Tiffen.
If you are not willing to spend the right amount, I would recommend you to hire a Steadicam op with his own rig. He will have the right tools and the knowledge and skills required to fly the camera properly.
If you want more info on it, go to www.steadicamforum.com in the steadi-newbies section.

But What about a plenty cheap steadicams at e-bay or Glidecam 400 for 600 usd and many others for 400,500,700 usd?

You really need to have a support arm when flying Epic/Scarlet. The 400 isn't designed to take a heavy camera - it's made for light camcorders. If you want to use a cheaper unit, you need to get a stabilizing arm/support also (as Matthew suggested earlier in his post)... the weight will be too much without it and even with this set up, it might be over it's weight limit.

On the Ebay (India/Proaim) etc stuff, whilst it looks like a bargain, it might end up being junk when you get it. I know of many people that bought rigging parts (plates/matteboxes etc) and they just fell apart or couldn't stand up to a shoot... so, not really made to last.

If you want to risk it and experiment, you may get lucky...

I can second the glidecam 4000 with support vest. We stripped down a Scarlet and slapped it on... worked like a charm!

Exactly.

Those aren't Steadicams. Steadicam® is a brand, now owned by Tiffen... Glidecam, FlyCam etc are all stabilizers, but they are not Steadicams. Let's just be clear about that.
