Hi, just started using red footage and wondered if someone could give me advice on this workflow.

So i was going to export 2k prores 4444 quicktimes for all the footage from Clipfinder. Then i was going to bring all this footage into final cut to edit 2k. Then relink all the files to the original r3d files. then export the xml of this to premiere and then bring this project into AE. Then grade and do post in AE.

We also need to do tracking which we'll do on the 2k prores 4444 files.
The reason we're grading in AE is because we're not very familiar with color.

Does anyone see anything horribly wrong with this workflow. The project is to be delivered HD 1920x1080. Is there a reason why i shouldn't export the prores files and edit at 1920x1080?

thanks!

first thing. I'd go directly to 1920x1080. don't bother with 2k. it will only slow down your compositing and color grading in AE.

Also I'd go to Uncompressed 422 directly from CF and connect to those files through CF after edit is locked. Red is just way to slow in AE. The extra dynamic range isn't worth the performance hit.

Yeah, what i've decided to do now is export 768x432 prores HQ quicktimes from clipfinder. edit these in final cut. reconform in clipfinder to prores 4444 1920x1080. then use these for a high quality edit in final cut, and export to premiere to bring into after effects. grade, and track, etc with the prores clips.
any advice on if that's BAD would be very welcome! i understand we're not getting the full r3d range, but we're not using raids, and we're not using color, because 1 we don't have any raids, and 2 we know after effects much better than color (i.e. we don't know color at all!).
in clipfinder the settings i'm using are:
quicktime
HD+ normal de-bayer
prores 4444
1920x1080
Gauss resampling filter

thanks

Yeah I don't like Color either. I usually edit the M proxies in FCP, export XML, reconnect to R3D's in CF, and bring the XML produced by CF into AE through an AE script... can't remember where I found the one I use but I think there are a couple if you google around.

Cheers,
Josh
