A question for my fellow Redusers who are well versed in the computer science side of things, what is your opinion of antivirus software for Macs running Big Sur and Monterey? I have always tried to avoid AV software as I felt the tradeoff in computer performance might outweigh the small risk of a Mac infection but given that cyber attacks are going to get more prevalent in the coming years, I'm wondering if I have to reconsider this strategy. And although I am very good about not clicking on links I'm not certain are valid, or visiting websites that might have malicious viruses running rampant, I am human and could slip up.
1. Do you feel it is necessary to use AV on a Mac in 2022?
2. Which software would you choose and why?
3. When these companies say there will be a small hit on performance, is it actually small or a bit too much for those of us doing heavy tasks like video editing/VFX?
4. Is there any chance that an AV program could actually cause its own set of problems, even if different than the ones they are trying to solve?
5. Are there viruses that can be transferred with seemingly harmless files such as quicktime movies and graphic files. These are files that are sent to us all of the time, so if it's possible I suppose that could be a weak link in my current system. Back in the 90's when there were worm viruses I believe it was less about the files and more about an actual disk itself getting infected and then transferring that virus to other machines, so maybe the same now, not so much the files but the method in which they are transferred.
Thanks in advance for the help.
