i am very close to pull the trigger on the pl mount with 17-50 red prime lens, but not sure if red pro lenses automatic meaning if the camera can communicate with the lens? example; auto focusing, Iso control, and Iris control? Can anyone help me make my decision easier or if you have a better setup that I don't know about that will be cheaper.

If you want auto focus then you need to go with a canon mount. PL lenses have manual focus and manual iris only.

First off: the 17-50mm is no prime. Next: no lens on this planet has ISO control. I don't want to sound harsh, but in your own best interest you may need to do some further reading before getting into such an investment, I'm afraid.

Yes, the 17-50mm can communicate it's settings with the camera, but that's all. No PL lens will offer you auto focus, auto iris or stabilization.

I know I made some reading and unerstood a lot more, and decide it to go with canon mount for it gives me more options, by the way Lewis your teaser is great man I really enjoyed it.

Thanks guys

Thanks man! I agree with your choice, I think that's what you need. Getting my Canon Mount soon as well for the more relaxing projects...

oh I love to give advices, especially if someone else will pay for that;
just a quick note, don't hold your breath for that AF, at least not at the current firmware version

Seems to be working pretty well from what I heard...

I have used the AF with the canon mount, and it works great in the right scenarios. Also, the RPZ 17-50 works awesome! The image it produces is superb. However there is def. a difference in the canon mount vs. the PL mount. First off the canon lenses are much more affordable, secondly Image stabilization in lens works great, and AF works well also. PL mount has none of the above, but the image is superior (IMO, and others opinions as well) and the option for anamorphic, and high dollar cine lenses is a def. plus if you have the money. So it's give and take, if you have somewhat of a lower budget go with the canon lens mount. Alternatively you can have both lens mount's and a wider variety of options. That is where I am going at least.

I seem to remember seeing a post recently from one of RED's founders that something very cool in auto focus was coming to a build quite soon.

If you're going to get one all purpose Canon mount lens in roughly the mm range you listed, you might want to look at the Canon 24-70, and pre-order the new one that ships hopefully on April 17th. Doesn't have IS, but should be about perfect (at least for an L lens) in almost all other ways. That's what I ordered after some research.

But, from your initial post, you might want to spend some time on the "Lens Tests" forum:

http://www.reduser.net/forum/forumdisplay.php?6-Lens-Tests

and spend a massive amount of times reading threads on many of the others.

There are so many things to learn before one can make an intelligent decision on all the accessories you'll need (and you're going to need a lot, as the Scarlet is a 'gateway drug').

I understand exactly where you're coming from as ... you're a jeweler and I design databases for a living. I've asked more than my share of really dumb questions while trying to get up to speed.

Autofocus on the Scarlet is clunky and I would personally never use it. I tried it a few times and found it to be fairly worthless. If you're looking for autofocus like you have on a EX3 or similar, I think you'll be veyr disappointed.

That is just the thread that spurred me on to test the AF myself, and using a slow 24-105 AF lens, it worked great.

There's a post at the end of that thread, where one Scarlet user is saying the delay in focusing doesn't match what Epic users are reporting.

The Scarlet is definitely slower than the Epic as far as rolling shutter delay (giving about 14ms, comparable to a DSLR), I wonder if AF is affected also by the slower clock speed?

Our cameras are working right now, but we'll do some serious testing over easter regarding AF, when both the Epic and one Scarlet are in. But I can already say that RS is better than DSLRs even on the Scarlet, about the level of the MXed R1.
