So this is a guide to buying aRED camera and in generally buying anything on line

So you know the feeling, you’ve found the perfect object that you want, you go to ebay and start searching. You find it, you bid, you win! So it arrives and, well it doesn’t work- its broken. If it’s a RED camera your talking thousands of dollars, maybe tens of thousands. Your screwed…. He said, she said, ebay return—its ugly.

What I learned is avoid all that by having RED evaluate the camera, costs a hundred dollars but well worth it. They will also transfer ownership at that time-important if you ever need service or upgrade.

The next lesson I learned, was that the best deals are on reduser.net. Ebay..meh.
Unfortunately I learned this after I bought on Ebay. What I bought was a red one mx.
I was so excited. When it arrived I immediately set it up to test it. It powered up….good. But when I plugged in the record media it didn’t recognize it. Concerned, I sent the seller an ebay message..no response. Days pass… I contact RED…I describe the problem..they walk me through some diagnostic procedures and determine it has a serious problem and needs to be sent in for evaluation.

I eventually hear back from the seller. They claim no knowledge of the problem. We come to a verbal agreement to let RED evaluate the camera and if the cost was in hundreds the seller would cover that and I would pay the shipping. This seemed a win win situation at the time..because I really wanted the camera and seller obviously wanted to sell it. There was an ebay return which was approved by the seller and only waiting for them to send me a shipping label. That label never came.

So I shipped the camera to RED for evaluation. I insured it for $3000, at a cost of $85. After a week they came back with a quote of $5250 to repair the camera. It turns out the sound board and the logic board were damaged and somebody had opened the camera and attempt a repair.

I immediately contacted the seller they denied any responsibility. I repeatedly asked them if they had loaned the camera out or rented it ..who was the last person to use it? I never received an answer.

The seller closed the return at Ebay. I appealed, but was denied because I sent the camera to RED for evaluation.

At this point I called Chase Visa to request a chargeback. Which they did immediately.

So here are the two takeaways:

1. Buy on reusers.net
2. Have RED evaluate and transfer ownership
3. Always buy on a visa credit card with charge back capability

If you do those three things you will have more time to create great films and waste less time on bullshit.

Ps my main contact at RED was
Trevor Whitecotton
And he was awesome … so a shout out and thank you to you.

Farouk, be careful with chargebacks since PayPal could still ask you for the eBay transaction money and you could end up with a negative balance which would lead to a really bad experience.

Try to settle this with eBay first.
