Hi there guys,

I've spent most of my time working in virtual environments when its comes to film making but have recently started real life filming and editing. I got hold of a semi OK 1080i cam which did the job but I was looking to take the leap into professional equipment. My initial target was to get one of the Sony Z5 range but recently discovered about RED and i was amazed by what they are doing. After a bit more research I discovered the scarlet and the $3k camera they had. To cut the the chase, I'm ideally after a camera capable of doing 120fps recordings at 1080p or above without having it compressed the footage or only allow burst fire, 3k would obviously be even better though. If anyone can point me in the right direction as to alternatives or where i can actually purchase a Scarlet (I noticed that the official site has upgraded the scarlet and offers only a $5k equivalent now?) I would be grateful.

Thanks.

The question is not so much where, but when. Release is scheduled for around May/June if I remember correctly.

Yeah, the Fixed-lens Scarlet's specifications have been upgraded a long way since the original planned version (and you get all the essential modules almost free, as well). A lot of people have complained about the price rising slightly, but the camera package is really worth far more than RED are planning to sell it for.

Welcome to the club of waiting scarlet to be released.. keep saying: Go Go RED.. and have some education about the new system from this forum.. people here are really brilliant and helpful...

Obviously ! It seems to be an AMAZING camera.
Since I'm french, the dollars/euros conversion makes it a lot more worth the price ! I have not decided yet on which Scarlet to buy, but if I go with the fixed one, I plan to have a $8-10k budget. I'd love to have and EVF dans by a SmallHD monitor so I can have EVF and screen monitoring (assuming the 2,8 inches monitor coming in the package does not have HDMI input... If it has, I don't need another one and it would be just GREAT !) at the same time !
I'm also considering Zacuto rigs ti handle the camera and some SSD solution to.
Aaaaaah.... Dreaming of SCARLET... (giving that camera a girl name will make our wifes jealous !...:smilielol5:)

Single Zoom vs. C mount vs. Mini-primes Vs. S35

Single Zoom vs. C mount vs. Mini-primes Vs. S35

It seems that good C mount lenses are going up in price on the used market so maybe the single lens Scarlet will be the best value.

Small lenses that resolve enough are not going to be cheep, and ones that are cheep are going to be a bit soft at 3K probably.

At the S35 size it is easer to make lenses of good resolution, and the larger sensor makes the OLPF thiner in ratio to the image width, so I would think in general the S35 camera will have an over-all better look with average quality lenses.

With the 11mm sensor model (so called 2/3") the lenses will need to be of high quality to resolve near 3K (3072*0.707=2171*(9/16)=1221 video lines), but if you can live with 16mm like resolution (less than 800 video lines) then older move lenses would be of use.

The cost of a good lens set could cost more than the camera itself, so the Scarlet with the built in Zoom lens may give the lowest total system cost, and the look would match maybe better from shot to shot, even if you get the "zoom look" to everything...
