  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Will someone at Red please download Premiere and After Effects CS3 and tell us what the playback and ease/difficulty is in those programs with Red footage? It has been stated that Redcode will work with any quicktime enabled program and both of those are, I'm sure there is some pressure from apple to not mention if Adobe is capable or not.

I also understand that Apple came to you guys and that is why you're working with them right now, but it would be great to know what we can expect when we have to leave FCP's timeline and do some After Effects work, or if we want to cut something in Premiere.
 
It works fine. We're not going to talk about performance yet since that can and probably will change before delivery. It's also highly depended on the machine you have and such.

We're had at work and simply do not have the time to test everything today or integrated with all applications. Obviously both things are high on the list. We want people to use the footage they shot.

QuickTime is more than a file format. Its a container and a system for working with temporal information. If someone makes a Fleenerhosen 6000 COmpression/DECompression (CODEC) for QuickTime and you install it in your QuickTime environment (which operates at the system wide level), then it will show up and work with every piece of software you have that supports QuickTime. This is what Red has done and why Red Cine will allow you to output to any format you wish as Red Cine supports the QuickTime environment.
 
Correct. But I think he was referring to the possibility of not having to go through redcine, although very nice, it just would be nice to know what the native solutions are for the Adobe software users. But yes, we are and will continue to be patient.
 
You can load footage without going through REDCINE. If you need more control you probably want to go through REDCINE (for now).
 
Does doing the FCP way of things and using the plugin that will be released eventually allow you that "more control" you speak of? Or even still you'd suggest going through Redcine?

Presumably currently you could do it, but only with a 2k windowed REDCODE RAW timeline, or a 2k proxy timeline from REDCODE 4k. Hopefully in future Color will make the jump to 4k.

Of course the question is really whether the result will be full quality. It has been suggested that the 2k proxy is only at 'offline' quality, although probably a pretty good one given wavelets' ability to produce fractional rez proxies. Nonetheless, I would think you would want to go through REDCINE to produce a full quality 2k timeline from 4k rushes to send to Color.

What about 2k windowed REDCODE RAW? Can we work with that at full quality using FCP/Color. Hopefully even if the codec gives a preview quality result in FCP to enable working in real time, the codec will send full quality images to Color, or other Quicktime apps like Shake.
 
Ok, one more quick question. If I open up a 4k raw clip in redcine and save a LUT/look then open that same raw clip back up in redcine at a later point, does Redcine remember the LUT/look? If so, would that new LUT/look be what After Effects and Premiere would see?

If that is the case then that would be great. I could edit all that I wanted in Premiere, then go back to Redcine and change a few LUts and reopen my project and be ready for a final grading.

The "Redcine" FCP plugin, will give you all the control of REDCINE within FCP.

I know that for FCP. It was more a logistical question. He said that it allows you more control. I was asking, is it equal to the control offered to the plugin in FCP or vice versa. However you want to phrase it.
