Hi everyone!

I'm having problems with my post production workflow. Hope to get some answers here :)

I use a mac mini M1 and an external hard drive (rugged 2TB) for editing. Adobe Premiere crashes continuously with R3D footage. Crashing occurs when clicking media from project folder to source monitor. Starts loading and never stops...Doesn't happen every time but about 1/10 clicks.

User based error or something else?

Thanks!

Have you tried the media on a different drive?
Do you have enough space on the local to test?

I have the same issue with various other external hard drive. I do have enough local storage as well. However I don't want to store my footage on the local hard drive.

No, you don't want to store your footage on your local, but we're trying to deduce the issue here by testing on other drives and I am assuming you don't have access to other external options.

My external options are seagate & rugged hard drives USB 2.0 & USB 3.0.

My external options are seagate & rugged hard drives USB 2.0 & USB 3.0.

Both are really slow options for 6K IMHO.
I use an OWC Envoy ProFX on my 2013 MP via USB-C to USB3 and it's okay with most 4K R3D footage.
However, I tested a Komodo last week and shot a ton of footage.
6K on that drive is already pushing it.
Works great on a USB-C system like my 2019 MP but not so good with older setups.
I work in all four NLE options mostly Premiere and FCPX.
The OWC is more of a mobile drive, I use an array (pardon the pun) of RAIDs via SAS and TB2.

You can download an app called BlackMagic Disk Speed Test and see how those drives do in certain formats.
To give you an example, the OWC Envoy via USB-C to a 2019 Mac Pro does 1475MBs/1550MBs which should be okay for 8K RED RAW.
I wouldn't rely on that so in my workflow I PROXY everything even 4K.
