I've been using Premiere CC recently to edit a commercial with 4k HD R3D files and am truly sorry to say the experience has been a frustrating and painful one. The amount of crashing and 'serious error' messages which require shutdowns have altered our workflow completely. I have tried every trick to get around this: switching project files around, putting all footage directly on internal storage, changing render engines, etc. None of these workarounds have been able to beat the fickle nature of this program.

Am I alone here? What are my future options? I have bigger projects coming up and cannot continue with the headaches of Premiere CC in it's current state. I thought we were past the most basic editing hurtles.

Sorry to hear of your frustrations with CC.....

My solution would be to export edl/xml & send to Avid or FCPX.

I'm on PP 5.5 with many" serious errors" so the best thing I've found for Windows and PP is just do a Windows Restore which is so easy and quick. Restore is also the best backup system too, as you can initiate a new restore point anytime.

So sad to see Premiere degraded to what it is now. Back when Randy U. was the sole author , up to version 3 or so, the software rocked.
Now it's coded and bandaid-ed by a team of coders, and it shows.
I just rendered a 8 min short from 5K FF r3d's to a UHD output, with a lot of stabilize and CC, and it took 18 hours ! And the CPU was only at 11%. Total crap. For wedding video guys, me thinks.

Interesting. I generally find Premiere to be quite robust and fast. I don't know if I would actually trust it, or any other NLE to cut r3d's raw at this point. The files are just to big and red hasn't provided the SDK that would allow them to truly accelerate the gpu's. However, once in a standard Prores workflow I've found the app to be very solid and quick. Likewise, using other sequence based formats like DNG can be really fast because the software can generally use all the processors, unlike quicktime.

I'm also curious about FCPX, but I honestly don't see much acceleration there...they just seem to hide the resolution changes and background rendering better. As for Avid, that's really kind of an archaic joke at this point. To my knowledge the program still can't vary resolutions along a timeline nor can it support higher than 4K, let alone raw. If someone has insight on this please correct me, but most folks who use it do so because it's what they're used to, not what is actually better.

avid can ama link to raw files okay, it works. i mean its r3d files so your milage may very depending on your machine. you cant output 4k tho. which might be why hes cutting in 4k in the first place is my guess? so if 4k outputs is needed best to stick to CC or FCPX
