Anyone using Adobe Prelude as part of their workflow yet?

Not yet, but I have a project starting on Wednesday that will be my first go at it. I'll give you an update Wednesday night.

I think this is what On-Location morphed into. If I guess right, I think it could grow into a large piece of software for a Data Wrangler through to a DIT. Having the ability to mange the data on set, but also to set looks for post. One piece of software for all on-set responsibilities might be interesting.

Just a guess though.

Prelude is not a morph of On Location.

"Adobe OnLocation is a software solution for direct to disk monitoring and recording. It is designed for professionals who directly add recorded content and metadata to digital discs."

"Adobe Prelude CS6 software provides a unified interface for ingest and logging workflows, allowing you to work faster, stay organized, and streamline your production process.
Copy and transcode to your storage infrastructure and begin logging immediately, intuitively adding searchable markers and other temporal metadata. Create rough cuts with post-production notes that flow into Adobe Premiere Pro CS6, communicating the vision for the project through final editing."

Tom,

"morph" simply means to transform. Your description above does not make my statement incorrect. I "think," Adobe saw the landscape of the industry. OnLocation, yes had the onboard recording; but it's best feature was the metadata and organization of the media. That metadata would transfer over to Premiere when the project was ready to be cut. One of the things Adobe has gotten right for a long time is metadata. So you are telling me that Prelude does not organize media or deal with the media's metadata? Sure it doesn't have the onboard recording, because it's no longer relevant.

Just an FYI about Prelude... it does NOT support .r3d meta data yet, so you cannot add markers via Prelude that will transfer to Premiere later on. I was pretty bummed to learn this, so Prelude is going to sit unused by me until they add the .r3d support.

You can see my question about this, and Adobe's response here: http://forums.adobe.com/message/4425869#4425869

Gee Adam, thanks for explaining to me what morph means : / Read the definitions. On location was for disc recording of live events. Prelude is a file acquisition/transcoding/organizing/rough cutting piece of software that indeed does use metadata. Imagine that. As enjoyable as your smarmy delivery was, please spare me any reprises. I prefer to have dialogs with folks that arent smart asses. :D

Greg is right.

Wes from Adobe was at REDucation NY last week, and I pulled him aside and let him know how important this was. I even gave some guidance on an engineering approach.

He's a good guy.

His feedback in general and on this in particle is that we let Adobe know what we want. He said he hadn't heard this was even of interest until last week but that he'd had the same requests I had from another RED centric production company earlier in the week.

Good news REDCOLOR/REDGAMA 3 is coming soon. He may have even shown a demo, I was busy managing another issue at the time.

Good point Greg.
Made my life easy.

Wow, my intention was not to be a smart ass as you put it, but to lay a foundation for my argument. I still disagree with you, so be it! Unfortunately, this is probably something WE don't need to be arguing about it.

Respectfully,

Adam

Fine, I respectfully agree to disagree.

Does Prelude transcode R3D into something else? I briefly looked at the Adobe Prelude web page, and got that idea - so I dismissed it as being useful.

Is it based on a database, and if so, which one?

Any idea when they might be able to implement metadata?

BTW - how does one actually input the metadata that is stored for each frame such as 'production name', 'director Name', etc. that is mentioned in the RED firmware pdf - so that it can be stored in the first place?

Hi Les,

I should probably let Adobe answer this, but as I understand it while there is a database the meta data is essentially wrapped in the enclosing file type. Think of it as a header file or something similar. Given that it is not possible to write a R3D at this point Adobe can't use that approach for R3D's. I discussed an implementation that would be an extension to the RMD, (think XML.)

I didn't talk through trans-coding as that's not an option I'm particularly interested in given the abilities of REDCINE-X Pro

You can input the data you mention in the camera.

There isn't a way to view that yet but it is coming.

Steve
