Ok
I am ashamed that this is my 3rd post since I neither ordered or own a red and the fact I am not a "industry proffesional".... I have however been reading this forum since the rumors of red and I am astonished at the trajectory of this morden marvel of techno lust has evolved to.

Even tho I am not a working pro I could be classified as a pro-hobbiest I have been cutting on pc using Adobe since 4.5 back in 94 with every revision up into CS3 always on custom built machines. Using Digital 8, XL, XL2 & HVX200 shooting a bunch of mostly personal travel, friends weddings, music video for local bands and even DP'd/Editied/Sound mixed a 77min really indie movie on camcorders that made it into CineSol Movie Festival that cost like 3 thousand. ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xqR33tTSrd8&NR=1 )

To get to the point, I did a short stint for FOX Rio of South Texas before coming to Dallas, I got to touch a FCP/MAC/DECKlnk system for the first time I thought wow, this is what people talked about. Even tho i still prefer PPro I can see tha appeal of a MAC/FCP combo. But the premium was just not fiscal for me for a home studio and some 20k+ dream cams.

Than red pops on the scene with there sub 18k 4k resolution lusty monotlith. HOLY CRAP but ah las still out of the range of this poor lil technichian.

THEN LIKE MOSES FROM MT SINAI, SCARLET.... 3k for 3k... I ran out and sank 7k on a MAC PRo 3ghzQuad,/FCP/AJA and soon a Scarlet CAM.... TEARS..... Than a few days later ****R3D Native Support for PPRo***** Awwwwww the irony. NOT mad as I have fallen in love with my Mac system setup and already put in the order for Adobe PRO Master Collection for mac and look forward to get back int the chair and use the tool I have been throught thick and thin again.

ADOBE IM COMING HOME

SO MAKE WITH THE PLUGIN ALREADY !!!!!!! :construction:

you might want to hold on to the mac awhile longer ...
i have a borrowed mac here with FCP ... i use it to convert R3d to 2k cineform to edit in sony Vegas ...
i was a Premiere 4.5 user and switched to Vegas 2 back in 2000 ?
for the past 2 weeks i've been using the current trial version of PP for approx a hr a day ... everyday it freezes 2-3 times an hr ( this is editing DV and SD mpeg clips) ...perhaps it's vista ?? but vista is running Redcine with no problems ... i'll wait till the Red plug in is released and give it a try for few weeks but so far FCP & sony vegas is solid at 2k .... i'd prefer not having to use the Mac but as of NOW there is no image/with sound easy workflow for PC like there is on Mac ...

It probably is vista. My vista laptop ran redcine for weeks. No change to laptop, no updates. At first it was slow at selecting R3Ds to load, the whole interface would kinda freeze for 30sec between clicks as I navigated one folder at a time, it was tedious. Then Redcine stopped doing that and the interface bucked up, and for a couple of weeks it was almost a pleasure to use. Then that ended, don`t know why. No more exporting tiffs, and a visual c++ runtime error hiding in the background after a ctrl-alt-del forced exeunt.
I love vista, yesterday I tried to delete a 6.33mb file from my documents. When I came back an hour later it still said it was preparing to delete. Nice one. So I tried deleting it three more times just to fill my screen up with preparation dialogs. I give up, Microsoft should too. Maybe Microsoft should dedicate a cpu core to processing preparation dialogs??? One day, it will no doubt take till Christmas to delete a file, even if its january, and Microsoft are taking giant leaps in this direction...the innovations just keep coming!!
Fortunately my iMac turned up yesterday also, and it is FAST, lets hope it stays that way, I`ll be installing nowt but the basic R3D->tiff tools, and Shake. I don`t have a negative thing to say so far, although an online update did freeze. Never used one before, but looking good. I generally do a basic edit by moving Tiffs out of folders into temp folders, then I process whats left further..Redcine is fast on this platform..

touché.

Good advice! The good thing is I have two suites (pc & mac) that are completely spec'd out and been doing test on with the R3D files I downloads from REDRelay site. Im using redcine and alert turning them into DVCPro HD 720/1080(PC) or Apple PRo res HD 4:2:2 and had quite a bit of success.

PC
Dual Quad 2.8 Xeons
4 Gigs DDR II 6400
NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GTX Overclock
160gb pri / 4x500gb (2tb) on/hardware SATA raid 0
Vista Ultimate 32bit
Aodbe CS3 Master collection
Decklink Multibridge PRO
28" Display

Mac
Dual Quad 3.0ghz Xeons
8GB of 800MHz DDR2 Ram
NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT
350pri / 3x500gb (1.5tb) raid 0
Mac OSX Binary
FCP6.3(for now)/AftrFx /Pshop > Adobe Master Collection for Mac on the way.
Aja Kona
30" Dell ultrasharp Display

Both of these systems are sharing 50" plasama for preview and a NetGear READY NAS rackmount storage with gigabit ethernet between them for offline project storage. NOW ASK ME IF I'VE DONE ANYTHING IN THE WITH IT.... NADA and it depressing the heck out of me... WORK WORK WORK (although i have had limited success of network editing HDVC pro 720p footage as long as you keep it extremely lite.) So regardless on who wins the war I good to go.

As to the freezing!! huh, I don't know... I have thrown all sorts of footage at the new CS2/CS3 relase and its proven to be rock solid compared to the likes of 6.0 switch to PPRo1.0. Mostly lil headaches like timecode flukes but nothing serious. Are these REDCine SD rendered?? Somthing in the stream? Who knows!

I would swear by Adobe but than again my work has alway been self paced. I never used it in deadline oriented production with the exception of my beloved After FX. (personal opinion over motion/ looks pretty but not in your control)

:weight_lift:

Vista is retarded. I have been working on PP for years on XP and never, ever get any errors. I had Vista on one machine for about 3 weeks and had nothing BUT problems with PP, Cineform, etc.

On AE, I get memory shortage errors on XP, but that's about it. PP runs like clockwork on my XP machines.

Upgrade to XP if you have Vista.

Haha

LOL

Yup, I said UPGRADE, going back is an upgrade.

Adobe will take awhile, if you have a job today, tomorrow buy a mac so you can get pay.

Pre-SP1 Vista is pretty unnaceptable.

I'm with Vista SP1 now.
I used to get memory shortage in AE, now it's gone.
No freezes on Premiere, but never had them anyway.

And rendering is quite fast with a 3.0ghz quad.

I am definitely thinking of upgrading my system with a new motherboard and 4- or 8-core, and possibly moving to x64 Vista at some point, if for no other reason than RAM.

I want to see how all this Adobe stuff plays. No need to buy something today, when 4 months from now a chip might be 35% faster, unless I absolutely need it today.

Good thinking, Nehalem is going to make a huge difference when it comes to huge frame sizes, memory speed, processing performance. I almost always have more than 4gb of memory used of the 8 I've got in my quad core system. Ae and Pr and Vista will use whatever you can give them (obviously to a point, but until 32 GB of ram is common on a non-workstation, Pr and Ae can take everything you can give them).

Is this true?
So AE and Pr can use more than 2gb of RAM?

Cuz I never had a chance to test, and heard that it couldn't...

I thought AE and PP were limited to 3GBs of RAM no matter how much your system has? I cannot remember where I read that.

Deanan and Rob will answer all Adobe questions from now on in the Workflow forum...
