  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Adobe adds Dragon and Rocket-X support

Hi Patrick, Thanks for the info about fxphd.com. I had never heard of them but their courses seem current and valuable. How has your experience with the course been so far? I'm thinking of signing up for a few courses in January.... Or should I start this term? Didn't it start on October 1st?

David,

When is Adobe going to address the Pink Elephant in the room? Terrible outsourced phone tech support for these fantastic products?

Yep that is fixed as well

1/2 res playback on Rocket and I think you can get full on Rocket-X

Cheers

Dave

Premiere is very good IF you save often. I see crashes daily and submit the reports. I'm sticking with it because Adobe is taking some good steps forward and stability will improve with more active users "stress testing" it.

I'm taking a adobe premiere advanced class at fxphd.com ( class is prm301 ... just started so you can get in). Class is going over the entire CC suite and how it integrates together with premiere, it also shows common integration points to things like nuke/protools/etc. Is fairly amazing how adobe is supporting profesional work flows, The RED + Adobe integration I am finding very impressive, though I use redcine-x to start my workflow since I am mainly in the linux world with output of nuke coming into CC via DPX. CC at the editing and later stages is impressive, premiere is becoming my hub.

+1

having anything to do with tech support is a nightmare, and thus a lot of users relay on the Adobe guys that hang on the forums, like Todd and David, who actually know their shit. But this 2 guys for millions of users, no matter how sharp they are... I mean that is not enough.

Last time I had a chat online with an Adobe agent he/she closed the conversation with "I'm sorry, we are not trained". That was a bit shocking and at the same time probably honest.
Then this person should have the option to transfer the user to a more trained person, so the conversation doesn't stop there.

You could have part of your support tech team that can handle very basic issues (as I'm sure a lot of users call in for basic problems), but you should have a team of experts that can take over at any time when the situation is too complex.

Where is FCPX in the Dragon and beyond context?

I think fxphd.com is great if your moving to "A" level type film that has a lot of fx and compositing(especially if your moving to the higher end tools like maya, nuke, syntheyes, realflow, etc). Most of the teachers are from the industry, which is both good and bad - good in that they totally know what they are doing, but bad in that you need to have some patience with thier schedule & teaching method(i.e. a film falls behind schedule or has a problem, they may need to miss a few classes). It's ok to start the classes right now for October, since they are online and you interact with the teacher via a forum. If you live in LA or someplace like that, I think physically going to film/fx classes is better, but for online I don't think you can beat fxphd.com.

I do a incremental back up about every 2 minutes (to a file that is incrementing by version number), then a full rolling backup to every day to a seperate disk array. Seems windows is a bit worse(I don't control the windows platform so could have nuthing to do with adobe), on my mac I keep a entire version back on the apple OS which i think helps(but I'm pretty impressed by the stability of AE on my retina macbook pro which has 16 gbytes of ram).

Im downloading CC now in Sri Lanka on the slowest internet ever... I hope it works when its done downloading.
Adobe this could not have come at a better time as I was having issues with importing the R3D clips from the new build but now I can wait to see what it can do.
Thank you, Adobe... did I just say that...

Yeah, I've almost never had anything resolved by Adobe tech support. The Adobe forums are ok for tips and tricks but the Premiere forum has very little help for anything Red related. This last tech support call was 5 hours with a tech who primarily had me on hold while he took control of the system. He seemed to be working on more than one issue at once and I'd constantly have to open up Word and type messages on the screen like "HELLO? ARE YOU STILL THERE?" when I'd just be sitting watching a dead screen. Half a day on the phone, nothing resolved, exactly back to where I started and a promise for a phone call back in 3-4 days.

Not sure I understand the question. FCPX currently supports Dragon right now.

RED APPLE WORKFLOW INSTALLER V3

SUMMARY

For Intel-based Apple Macintosh systems running Final Cut Pro X, or Final Cut Pro 7 (part of Final Cut Studio), the RED Apple Workflow Installer v3.0 provides the RED FCP X plug-in (v1.3), RED QuickTime codec (v5.2), and Log and Transfer plug-in for FCP (v30.3) functionality to import REDCODE RAW clips as either native REDCODE media (R3D’s) wrapped in QuickTime or the option to transcode them directly to Apple’s ProRes codec.

CHANGES SINCE LAST VERSION

Includes Dragon, Motion Mount, and Rocket-X support for the RED RAW plug-in for Final Cut Pro X, REDCODE preference panel, Color plug-in, Log & Transfer plug-in, and QuickTime codec.

+1 for acknowledging Adobe's terrible outsourced phone tech support. The only time they were ever able to help me is when they transfered my issue to a US based customer care service rep. Out-sourced tech support is completely useless and wasted so much of my time.

Agreed on this one, the experience with the overseas support has been shockingly bad. They even scheduled an appointment for a late evening phone call to solve a problem and then never called in, and simultaneously closed the ticket to bring up whatever metrics they use. That was on AE CS5.5 working with R3D's. At that point I had wasted so much time with them it was quicker to spend another several $K to build a completely new workstation and CS installation from scratch just to get back into gear. When intelligence fails, there's always the brute force method :emote_headwall:. I do, however, greatly appreciate the core development team's effort to upgrade with the latest RED SDK so quickly. That's going to help out the workflow immensely.

Mark that's odd. I didn't know that the Motion Mount requires updated post software. I thought it was a hardware mount only.

Paul, I have tested 16:9 4800x2700 with 7.1 and it's working on my machine with a rocket. Just a clean install. I think that both recent reports of this issue were using BlackMagic cards, IIRC. I don't think that's necessarily the issue but I would probably do a fresh re-install of Premiere (if you haven't) and see if that helps.

As you know, we have exchanged some info via PM but I just wanted to update the thread.

Exactly. We need the next tier in tech support.

With all the new features and tech around us, we need them now more than ever and there are some things (bugs) that no training can predict, when we find them we need someone skilled to know the difference and escalate the issue to the Devs.

Terrible, frustrating story sorry to hear it Paul.

Much thanks Wes, sent you back my email and home office number via email.

I did an absolutely clean install of Premiere CC without any luck (tech went through and deleted all the hidden files). I do have a BM Decklink 3D Extreem card in the system but didn't re-install BM Desktop Video after the clean install, but still no luck with Rocket playback. Tried just v7 or Premiere and then updated to 7.1. No luck with either.

Paul - hrmm.. I'm going to do a couple clean installs on my end just to verify my sanity as well.
Tomorrow is a much better day (Mondays are lousy) I will get ahold of you.

Paul - I'm not in tech support but I am happy to help my fellow Redusers when I can. My schedule and workload has settled a bit so I hope to spend a bit more time on the forums.

Wes

Those Adobe guys that are going silent are only here to answer the questions that they have answers to. if they don't know the answer, they won't answer it. If you ask them: How long until the Alchemy SDK is going to be a part of Premiere? They won't answer. If you ask them: Why do they have such crappy outsourced Eastern Hemisphere phone support? they won't answer. 5kHD, no answer. They are here to help with the things they have power over. If you tell them their phone support sucks, their not going to be like, "Ok that's it, were bringing phone support back to the Western Hemisphere"! Or, that's it, I'm walking right over to those lab guys and telling them that they better get that Alchemy SDK, or 5kHD working or their fired! That would be totally awesome, if that's what would happen, but I don't think it's going to.
