I'm not sure the point of this thread, or the original vimeo "test". Are BlackMagic HD-SDI capture cards too expensive to not install one in the computer, and perform any kind of analysis of the images from the capture of the digital data directly? Seriously, the moment I saw that this "test" was conducted by a video camera recording a monitor of another camera record a scene, I almost moved on. Unfortunately, I talked myself into reading the entire thread because I thought there had to be something more to this so called test than what I was seeing. Sadly, I was wrong.

I really do not know what you are talking about here...

I'm just started to watch my 20th time on DVD "THE CONFORMIST" a famous movie written by Alberto Moravia, directed by Bernardo Bertolucci and shot by Vittorio Storaro with Arri 35mm cameras, probably on Kodak stock 3 perf 35mm film...

Sorry, Sanjin. I don't *think* I was dissing your analysis of the original test, as much as I was the original test itself. If I was dissing your thread, it was because you chose to do a analysis of a flawed test in the first place. When someone of your passion makes a big deal of something so fundamentally flawed, it adds legitimacy to the original body of work.

It's all good, man. Go back to posting over-sized images and colorful, multi-font laden posts. :-)

Very good work Sanjin, as usual !

Gino,

thanks for your kind words.

Kyle,

don't worry everything is OK now.

Also I like and appreciate very much your contribution here.

In the analog domain yes, in the digital domain you should not have to.

But the point is, if you have adjusted it away from factory presets, then you better say so (if you are going to do an A/B camera quality test )

Stuart,

What do you mean? Even with SDI you have to calibrate the monitor.

%#}?!€ me, never thought I'd see the day when someone would spend time analizing iPhone footage of a screen of footage... Pretty crazy when you think about it...

Get out more guys ;-)

Except that SHARPNESS and RESOLUTION are NOT the same thing....

When actors complain, it is because of inappropriate amounts of EDGE DETAIL a.k.a ACUTANCE, not because of RESOLUTION.

You can have both high resolution AND low sharpness. Or low resolution AND high sharpness.

See the example of the sweater here

http://www.cambridgeincolour.com/tutorials/sharpness.htm

My thoughts exactly Stuart. And quite honestly, actresses have been complaining about HD from its first inception. Once their imperfections were being enhanced, the battle was on. In my opinion, this is where the art comes in. Makeup (adjusting to these higher resolution cameras), the lighting, and filtering. I just found Rodney's comments curious. Alexa has enough resolution to show these imperfections as well.

Actually I took this whole test with a grain of salt. As I said on Rodney's Vimeo page, he has an approach. I don't call it right or wrong. He's a well experienced DP and does good work. Who am I to judge how he makes his images. He wants a WYSIWYG image on his monitor. Others may use a different approach. I find it relatively easy to expose RED M-X in most situations, especially when there is adequate lighting and tools for controlling light. I do think one has to understand how RAW works and how to get the most out of it.

I say we don't get too worked up about this. Rodney is experimenting with a lot of cameras right now. He's a big fan of the Canon 5D/7D line as well, and as we know the DR on those cameras is limited. He also owns a RED. If he likes the look of the Alexa over the RED, then so be it. I guess the good news is that he is embracing digital, and willing to try new technology which I applaud him for that. At the end of the day, Rodney will be judged on the images he shoots for the shows he works on, just like the rest of us. So the rest is just tech babble.

He certainly is experimenting...there are many videos of him on
various websites extolling digital cameras. And from those he
appears to have gone from Red..to Canon 5/7D..and now Alexa.
He is a huge digital camera fan and seems wowed by all the new
digital cameras...and on this most of us here can certainly relate.

Nevertheless the use of the monitor on this test is why it became
such a big deal...and remains so...it's kinda puzzleing.
