Hi,

A few years ago we picked up a set of super speeds for our SR2 (arri S16mm) 9,5 - 50. Since our Red is nearing delivery I've been curious about how much the 16mm speeds would actually cover when put on the Red... I've seen posts about various 16mm Zooms not covering much more than 2K, but I always had a sneaking suspicion that primes would do better...

Yesterday we rented a Red for a job, and at the end of the shoot we put all our 16mm lenses on. And, it turns out that they cover quite a bit :-)

Pictures are here:

Turns out we're looking pretty good for 3K shooting. I sort'a knew the 50mm would cover S35 (it's technically not part of the S16mm speed set - AC manual lists S16mm speeds only up to 25mm).

Interesting observation is that you get almost the same usable coverage from the 16mm lens in 3K as you get from the 9,5mm in 2K.

Long story short - I think we will shoot quite a bit of 3K (especially since we also have a regular (T2.1) Zeiss 85mm for our S16 kit as well.

P.S. Excuse the mess in our office, we were a bit rushed towards the end of the shoot and spent all of 5 minutes picking up these shots - and both focus and exposure is all over the place = this is not a test of the image Quality of the glass/Red, just a quick and dirty test of the coverage.

dude.. i've been using the regular 16mm (not "s") lenses on thy red... and in daylight... i get 4k.

indoors... i get like a 3.5k if it's really very dim.

i've been using primes.

here check em out... these were shot 4k 2:1 (indoors) ISO 320

The 50mm looks like a Nikon rehoused by Samcine to me, not a Zeiss Superspeed?

Akube, you are using a Zeiss Standard Speed 16mm 2.1 lens designed for 35mm format (the 16mm refers to the focal lenght) whereas Jack is talking about using lenses designed for the Super16 format (smaller image recording area). What you are seeing when shooting your 16mm and 32mm under a 2.8/4 split is portholing which is a slight vignetting on the sides which imho can be quite nice...

yeah i know what you mean.. i saw his images... ive got an arriflex 16mm lens from the days of wwII... that small lens that is used with a camera with 3 lenses on its front... where you get to rotate the lenses around.. lols... suprisingly they look good! just waiting for my birger mount. and yes the slight vingetting is really nice.
