  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Active Storage XRAID ES

I'm looking for a 16TB RAID 5 or RAID 6 hooked up to a single computer, with the option to expand to larger sizes down the line.

Looking for the least expensive setup possible without getting a piece of junk obviously. I've been told to look at the Active Storage XRAID ES. what does everyone think? any other suggestions besides this one?

if you go with RAID 6, is it alright to use cheap Seagate 1.5TB drives from Micro Center ? I'm thinking of saving some money and NOT doing the tested enterprise class hard drives if I am set up with RAID 6. what does everyone think of this idea?

thanks

Compared to the XRAID this only has one RAID controller and is significantly slower. 774/553 vs 1570/920 MB/s read/write on XRAID. The XRAID ES is also not XSAN compatible. I'm saving up for the XRAID.... pretty much decided that's what I'm going with.

With further research I'm seeing that the Infortrend S16F-R1840 maybe a way better deal. Still researching pro's and cons but the the Active Storage is not looking so good. For example their 1TB modules are being listed for $500 on Silverado. That is $100 more than the Promise RAID 1TB modules being sold on Apple. Also you can buy into a one controller Promise RAID that can be expanded to two controllers for less than 7.5k.
