Cool. Thanks! Looking forward to checking this out

Many thanks Graeme for starting this thread. ACEScentral.com is definitely the place to go for info on ACES. We have 'ACES Mentors' as well as Product Partners (like RED) and staff from the Academy monitoring the Forum to help answer questions about ACES. Please join the conversation!

This is great, I've been procrastinating digging into ACES but this makes it easier.

One basic question though. Since we now have the RWG - LOG3G10 way of grading which, if I'm correct about this, is the same way as you use ACES (with an output LUT etc.), what should we actually use for grading? ACES or RWG/3G10?
If ACES is the new standard or quickly becoming it, shouldn't we all just jump on and use it? Just get rid of everything else and just do it, instead of choosing between "HD DVD" and "BluRay" :tongue_smilie:

The work I've been doing with RWG/Log3G10 and the transform math that goes with it seeks to address issues with ACES development I was not quite happy with. If you look under the FAQ tab here: http://www.arri.com/ru/camera/alexa/learn/working_with_aces/ you'll see some examples.

The other aspect is that there's no one workflow to suit all, and no one transform to suit all cameras or all DoPs. Of course, we've all seen some pretty fantastic images shot on Red and graded through ACES so we know the system works and looks great. But we've also seen fantastic images shot on Red that have gone through other very different workflows, for example Ian's and Corrine's work at LightIron.

ACES is great for the industry as it gives a common reference point. The documentation that will come with RWG/Log3G10 includes the math to go to / from ACES should you wish either to interact and work with each other.

Looked at the examples and ugh... see what you mean. But, standing on neutral ground, a unified ACES that's agreed upon by everyone would make everything easier for everyone working in the industry. Right now, there seem to be too many different flavors of ACES that I don't think it's ready. It's like HD-DVD and Bluray, just decide and make it the standard. If they could fix the problems and then decide that would make it much more interesting.

RWG/LOG3G10 is much easier and I get better result through it (with that lower saturation LUT) than I've been able to with the ACES settings in Resolve, so until ACES feels like the go to workflow everyone uses I'm gonna stick with RWG/LOG3G10.

Good to hear the reduced saturation version is working well for you. And that it's easy to use - that's one of the goals. If I have any real criticism of ACES at all is that especially with the multitude of acronyms it's often complex to understand and use.

Hi Graeme. Appreciate the conversations here. Probably some additional ACES experiences and voices that can help people at ACEScentral.com. Encourage you and RED users to weigh in there too!

Hi Guys,

I have a question, to get the Aces Proxy to REC 709 for the monitor on set, I need a LUT is that correct?
