So today is the big day, let's hear your predictions and wishes for this year's ceremony. Here is what I think and wish the final outcome would be:

Best Picture: Prediction: The Hurt Locker Wish: The Hurt Locker
There is no doubt that this is one of the most powerful and expertly crafted films in recent memory. This is in my mind one of the best films of the decade. It would be a crime if the Academy were to give it to Avatar. There are technical awards for a reason.

Best Director: Prediction: Kathryn Bigelow Wish: Kathryn Bigelow
Bigelow has always been an extremely talented director and films like Strange Days have shown this. THL was a phenomenal film and Begelow's expert directing is deserving of the top prize. Cameron is the other choice and while he is a visionary, he has for one, already won and IMO, way way to conceited for his own good.

Best Actor: Prediction: Jeff Bridges Wish: Jeff Bridges or Jeremy Renner
A best actor Award for Jeff has been long overdue. He was fantastic in Crazy Heart and is deserving of the title. If they give the award to someone else, it should be Renner who will be a major name following his role in The Hurt Locker. If not him, than anyone other than George Clooney.

Best Actress: Prediction: Sandra Bullock Wish: Carey Mulligan
Don't get me wrong, Sandra did a great job the TBS with the material she had but anyone who saw An Education can agree that Carey Mulligan has a bright future ahead of her and was perfect in her film.

Best Supporting Actor: Prediction: Christoph Waltz Wish: Christoph Waltz
He was the best part of Inglorious Basterds. Enough said.

Best Supporting Actress: Prediction: Mo'Nique Wish: Mo'Nique or Maggie Gyllenhaal
I was blown away by Mo'Nique in Precious and she should easily take the award. Maggie Gyllenhaal is very talented as well. I hope she receives more industry attention in the future.

Best Original Screenplay: Prediction: Inglorious Basterds Wish: Inglorious Basterds or A Serious Man
Both films feature perfect writing from some of the best directors in the biz. I would be happy with either film winning. (I would like to see A Serious Man win more just because it has been ignored for being such a wonderful film).

Best Adapted Screenplay: Prediction: Up In The Air Wish: District 9
Red One represent! Besides, I was not all that impressed with Up In The Air. District 9 is remarkable considering the fact that it is a directorial debut. It was also shot on Red which does not hurt.

Best Animated Film: Prediction: Up Wish: Up
This is my favorite Pixar film and Pixar has a good track record.

Art Direction: Prediction: Avatar Wish: Avatar
Let's face it, it looks stunningly beautiful.

Cinematography: Prediction: Avatar Wish: The White Ribbon
I LOVE BLACK AND WHITE.

Costume Design: I could not care less.

Editing: Prediction: Inglorious Basterds Wish:Inglorious Basterds
Best edited film of all the choices.

Original Song: I don't really care but it should go to Carzy Heart.

Original Score: Prediction: Up Wish: Up or The Hurt Locker

Visual Effects: Avatar (No one needed to think twice about this)

Sound Editing: It should go to Star Trek, a great film that has been ignored and overshadowed.

Foreign Language Film: The White Ribbon

Post you own predictions, wishes, gripes, whatever you want.

Have to agree with your predictions overall.
Avatar will likely either win alot more or alot less awards than people think.
Could go either way...that's why alot of will be watching.

Although from ratings numbers...will likely be less than American Idol.

I thought the "Hurt Locker" was terrible.

The directing was terrible in "Hurt Lock," so how it is even being considered is beyond me. The film was badly miscast, and that is no one but the director's fault.

I'm pulling for "Avatar" and "Crazy Heart" in most categories.

I too thought "The Hurt Locker" was overrated. It may have been because I saw it late and expected it to be the most amazing film I'd ever seen, and I felt let down in a huge way.

Avatar failed in almost every category except for visual and technical categories. The plot was hardly original and borrowed blatantly from at least eight films. The acting was sub par except for Zoe Saldana. On top of that, the script was filled with bad dialogue. Additionally, it had a political message that rammed itself down your throat. The Hurt Locker was the perfect setting for political commentary but was void of it. Avatar is worthy of technical and visual awards but I feel that there were so many more films this year that were crafted much better than Avatar. I enjoyed the film (saw it three times in IMAX) but as a fan of scifi films like 2001 and Blade Runner, I did not find Avatar to be mentally stimulating enough to take the top prize. I actually feel that it is the least deserving of best picture after The Blind Side. As a scifi film, D9 was light years ahead of Avatar. Keep in mind that most of the films competing against Avatar had budgets 1/10th of its total and have surpassed it. Avatar is a milestone in movie technology, nothing more.

I thought the Hurt Locker was incredible, and Avatar was Average. Overall this is a pretty weak year for movies.

When I saw Inglorious Basterds in August I said Christoph Waltz was a LOCK to win best supporting actor. One of the best performances I have ever seen.

I thought "the Serious Man" was a dud! How is this one of the best? I thought it was about 1/3rd of the "American Beauty" script...with far less plot or character development.

Oh well. I sure hope Avatar doesn't win best picture. That would be seriously disappointing. As much as I liked it as a spectacle, there are MANY better movies out there. Not any as big, but many better.

I wish Prieto would have been nominated for Best Cinematography for "State of Play," which was very well shot. To me, the cinematography on "The Hurt Locker" was bad. It was almost a parody or mockery of "shaky-cam" action cinematography. Every "war zone" cliché in the book was used, including those cheesy zooms.

want my 50 minutes back

want my 50 minutes back

That's how long my wife and I lasted watching hurt locker
Why it won is beyond me...

It won because it was the best. Everyone is entitled to their opinion but it got almost no negative reviews from critics and was the most powerful film I have seen in years. I am shocked so many people disagree.

Kathryn Bigelow Director, Hurt Locker Best Picture. Congratulations first female director. I heard that she had considered using Red but wasn't sure how it would handle the heat and shooting environment in Jordan.

Tom, I am surprised how much you dislike this film. The actors in my opinion were perfectly cast. The cinematography is not for everyone but fits well with the style of the film. This is one of the few films I have given a perfect review.

I thought Hurt Locker was good. I thought it was exciting But the main character was incomprehensible and cliched all at the same time. I found him to be completely unbelievable which sort of breaks the film since that's all there was to it.

But when it won for best sound editing I knew it had won best picture.

Why so? He certainly was rough around the edges and reckless but also had a good heart (shown in the side story with the Iraqi boy). No one is perfect and there was no doubt he was good at his job. One of the last scenes when he tries to get the bomb off the guy is another indication of his compassion (most would not have set a foot anywhere near the last guy but he stayed with him until the very end.)

Everyone has different tastes.

I happened to love The Hurt Locker but thought Inglourious Basterds was a better picture.

I thought A Serious Man was junk.

Wow..Hurt Locker really polarizing people..can't remember when a film
go so much strong positive and strong negative reactions. :emote_popcorn:

most seem to be negative reactions from the general public. It received almost universal praise from critics. I could find only one or two negative reviews on RT, it also has one of the highest meter scores on the site.
