As I start my adventure down the RED path of cinema excellence I was hoping on the bare bones setup to begin learning my camera. Scarlet brain with SSD and canon mount, redvolt, SSD 64 GB, redmote, bomb EVF, travel charger. And of course lens. Then add as I go. This adds up to $16,920. Seems like a good way to get started. Any suggestions?

I would go touch LCD instead of the EVF. And then don't get the Redmote until later...no need.

Yeah I would choose the LCD too and you don't need the remote either. But you will need the side handle if you are going with the redvolt. You better add a few of those batteries.

When filming outdoors I have trouble seeing the image on the LCD. Also I hear the new EVF is amazing.

If money is no object then yes, the new Evf is nice. If money is an issue, there a other EVF options like the ones from zacuto.

The scarlet X AL Canon mount collection and add the EVF sounds perfect. Getting close to $20K. Time to check out zacuto and woodencamera. I've been following RED since 2008 and have never been closer to actually getting this camera. I feel like I've climbed the ladder to the high dive and am about to dive off. Scarey but thrilling all at the same time!

I will mention that I have the post aspect under control. New Maingear compjter which is crazy fast, Adobe production premeium, etc. I jst need R3D files from my camera to make it all happen.

I have a nice manfrotto tripod. Working through the wooden camera site. Recommendations on putting together a rig for above RED setup? Thanks way in advance.

or......
Zacuto studio base plate

you could get an lcd hood for your shoots outdoors. Also, keep in mind that the RED Volt only powers the camera for about 30 minutes and then takes a couple hours to recharge.

I like the EVF better than the monitor. And I have the old one. Colors and levels are off, but I've never understood how people can frame a picture looking at a screen. You can also go more compact with a EVF and a short cable. There are a lot of option on how to attach the viewfinder to the camera, but most of them are way too complicated. Just get a simple solution, that gets that viewfinder as close to the camera body-side. You must have the option of tilting the viewfinder though.

When using just the EVF, I can recommend programming the scroll wheel on the handle to the iris controls. Very fast iris corrections, like on a regular SLR.

The new EVF should be excellent, and I've sent mine in for upgrade. So there's no excuse now :)

+1
OLD BOMB (*sob!*) user and I really like it. Means a side-handle is a must but for viewing-anywhere capability in a very compact form-factor with seemingly indestructible build quality makes it a great tool.
I can only imagine what the OLED version is like!`(OK, really...I do.not.want.to.know.)
