On September 21st, Criminal Minds, the first ongoing network series captured on EPIC, will air on CBS. What's significant about this group of professionals is not that they are paving the way for high resolution, future-proof, RAW image capture on television. What's significant about this group of professionals is that they are in their 7th season! Criminal Minds is a show that started on 35mm film for the first three seasons. They later switched to F35 and HDSR tape and now they've moved on to power of file based tools with EPIC.
Thanks to the foresight of one of the best crews and production teams I've ever worked with, Light Iron has the honor of teaming up with Keslow Camera to manage an entirely new system of capture with Keslow's Epics, a entirely new system color with Lily Pad, and entirely new system of processing with OUTPOST and to do this with a group that adopted everything practically overnight.

I have to say the Criminal Minds people are a rare bunch. With 7 massively successful season's in, why put a near-perfect system to risk? Simple: because Criminal Minds didn't have to change...they just wanted to. All of them. This group just wanted to be better at their craft in every possible capacity, and that's significant.

Wow nice Michael.
Congrats guys!

We've loved working with DP Greg St Johns' stellar crew and the great opportunity to be a part of the first network television production shot on RED's EPIC 5k camera.

It is not the first network television production to be shot on Epic. I graded a CBS medical drama pilot directed by David Nutter and shot by Rob Sweeney this past pilot season that I believe was the first network level show to use Epic (using Keslow's cameras, as I recall - have you forgotten already, Brad?). "Criminal Minds" might, however, be the first series to do so (is Blue Bloods using Epics this season??). I would point out, however, that it is certainly not the first "legacy" series to embrace file based cameras and methods. "ER", did that almost 4 years ago, and they did it for the last 6 episodes of a series that ran 15 years. There is a fairly substantial number of shows that have gone from years of film production to digital methods, including 2 out of the 3 CSI's, NCIS, One Tree Hill, Fringe (this season), Bones, and numerous others.

I understand Michael's enthusiasm, and I'm happy for him. But this is hardly the first legacy show to make these kind of changes.

Congratulations to both LI and Keslow- well deserved for pioneering the RED in broadcast TV.
Now can someone PLEEEEEASE fix the title... I'm not a native speaker and it hurts my eyes looking at it.....

Keslow did provide the cameras for that medical drama pilot, and we all had our fingers crossed that it would get picked up. Criminal Minds is the first ongoing television show to use the Epic, and we are so proud to be a part of it! This is not to discount any of the other series that have made the switch from film to digital (including House, MD, with whom we also made the transition), but to congratulate Red Digital, the Epic camera, and the crew of Criminal Minds.

A number of additional legacy film shows switched to digital shooting this season. As you mentioned, House has now changed. So has Fringe, Private Practice, One Tree Hill, and Desperate Housewives. And needless to say there are no new film shows. My guess is that the viewing public won't notice and won't really care, but it is significant none the less.
