Hi All.

Just an open invitation to attend a screening on both 35mm and DCP of some available light tests that I shot late last year. I shot a series of sequences using the RED MX, Alexa, Sony F3, 35mm, Super 16 and a 1DmkIV.

You'll get to watch the same 2 min short film repeated and shot using 6 different cameras.

More info here and make sure you RSVP if you're planning to come along.

The screening is taking place at ACMI in Melbourne on the 7th of May at 2pm in Cinema 2. I'll be there with the writer director Kate Dennis to do some Q&A after, along with the guys from Deluxe who were kind enough to do the post for us.

Hope to see you there.

Gday Tim,

Theres talk of a Sydney screening being organized by the ACS. I'll be sure to post here when it happens. I'll be putting the clips online as well, but it's really designed to be seen in a cinema environment.

Congrats John, sounds like a great test and would love to see it. +1 for bringing to Sydney!

This sounds really cool. I'd love to see them. Any plan on puting them on the web somewhere after?

Well image quality is a very nebulous and amorphous thing isn't it. What I like won't be what someone else likes. My thinking in getting a test like this done was to deliberately try to avoid shooting the dry things one normally shoots with camera tests and actually treat it like I was shooting drama.

Not only that, I felt it was really important to see the results in a cinema as they would be finished is someone was shooting for a theatric release using the two commonly available distribution platforms, 35mm print and DCP.

ANyone who makes it this screening will not only see the edited 2 min sequence shot with each camera, BUT I've also added in some ungraded / graded split screens and some 200% crops.

I also don't want to pre-empt the screening and what others would hopefully like to say about what they see, but I will say that both he Alexa and the RED MX were very close to matching the film in terms of both colour and dynamic range as well as feel. The Alexa was better at some things, the RED was better at others.

They all felt unique to view and I don't want to reveal too much yet, but there wasn't really a clear winner for me. It actually comes down to what you think your project would need stylistically. Even the 16mm had a great look if that's what *your* film called for....
