Over a month ago, I sold a like-new MKH416 mic on these forums to a new member. I generally don't like selling to members with only 1 post but I did it anyway, the guy seemed honest enough. As usual, I gave him time to test out the mic and make sure there were no issues before the sale is over. He says the mic looks excellent and we agreed he would spend that night thoroughly testing to see if there were any issues, then the sale is done. Well, that was over a month ago, and then tonight I get an email from him saying the mic is broken, and that he is going to take it out on red user if I don't remedy the situation. :O

So, what's a guy to do? I know the mic was mint when I sent it to him. I'm afraid it was used on a set or rented out, then got damaged, and now he wants me to cover it. I think I did everything I could to make the sale fair for both of us, but coming several weeks later to tell me I sold him junk, after he initially told me it was great... just a bit overwhelmed.

Just thought I'd vent this issue... any thoughts..?

Sorry to hear this Yousuf, unfortunately I have been in similar situations, not ones but two times recently, with much bigger losses.

But with now 82 Red camera packages Brokered, I don't complain, still, I suggest that any one selling, makes very clear that there is a Grace period, usually I give 7 Days,
and that if in this 7 Days there is anything wrong with the gear then I am responsible for fixing it, anything after that is the sole responsibility of the buyer.

As we know, how it is with Electronics, thousand things can go wrong on sets.

Lesson learned for me, and now I guess for you as well... :(

I normally don't comment on these kind of things. But did you say you would give him overnight and he kept it for a month? Can you prove it with emails? A month is too long. If this is true, he bought it or stole it.

my 2cts

Simple: 30 days is way too long. This is actually why I don't like selling used equipment to *friends*. Manufacturers often don't even cover more than 30 days for electronics for new gear but I still feel guilty when I sell something that seems to work perfectly to a friend and it just goes kaput out of the blue a month later. It's just part of the gamble of purchasing used equipment. Even if both parties think it's in perfect condition it might be reaching the end of its life. That's why used gear is discounted--it's part of the risk. Most of the time it'll work perfectly like new for years. Sometimes it's a dud.

Did you ever notice that just when you convince yourself that people don't generally suck that some prick comes along to prove you wrong?

Maybe it's just me... ;-)

Scott, I once decided to be nice and let a student borrow an expensive DV Cam (when DV was still used) for a few months in exchange for a bit of work on a website of mine. He used it on several school projects, and when it came time to pay up, he stalled on the work, made excuses. Finally I said forget it, just return the camera. He then accused me of being responsible for him failing his project because the camera was bad, and hat I should compensate him! I had three emails prior with him saying the camera was great, and footage was excellent. From there his emails got nasty, and I threaten to call the cops on him for theft. He then would not return it because he thought I'd beat him up, and wanted to meet in a neutral location (I have kids, so beating up some guy on my front porch is the farthest thing on my mind). When he did come, he wanted me to sign some stupid thing staying that I would not attack him or his crapy company. In the end I got my camera back, but never felt a burning desire to help anyone out again.

I think he must have bought Yousuf's mic!

On a technical note, Sennheiser is really good about fixing things for reasonable rates. I had a client completely break my MKH50 (a $1500 mic) by dropping it, ruining the front grill and shorting it out such that zero sound would come from it. He thought it was a total loss. We mailed it into Sennheiser and it was only like $150 to completely make it good as new.

Did you say you would provide a warranty? If the overnight evaluation was all you offered then he bought it and shouldn't be complaining.

I take it you haven't received any money? This is the real problem. The best you can hope for may be getting a damaged mic returned.

Best of luck, I feel for you and hate it when anyone is put in this position.

Yousuf, I think you asked for it when you answered your own question by not selling to a person with 1 post. Take it as a loss and move on.

Well at least it's not eBay/Paypal who are dealing with it like what the scammer did to me

Just saying that your statement could be taken out of context both by the plaintiff and the defendant as supporting their case.:001_unsure:

Indeed. I've been studying the art of saying nothing whilst appearing bold and outspoken... In honor of politicians everywhere.
