  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

This is not a demand to burden Red with (during what must be a very busy time) but a question for the forum and a declaration of interest.

Basically I would like to see a new resolution added. If this has been covered and Red has said something definitive I apologise.

For my own jobs (and definitely for anyone hiring my cameras) I would like to see a 24mm(ish) wide on the chip 16:9 mode.

Why:

1) So we may use smaller and cheaper Matt-boxes with common wide angle lenses (for example LMB 15 with 3 stages, the MMB1 and the O-box). We have 16mm UPs and 16-42 DPs and both demand matte-boxes that are big and heavy. I don't want to burden my cameras with a big mattbox all the time and at the moment unless I drop to 4kHD the above doesn't cover (I checked the LMB 15 and a other Reduser member had a look at the other 2)

2) For the possibility to offer a S35 16:9 frame with 100fps..... If I have this wrong I apologise but my calculations suggest that between 23.5 and 24mm would allow 100fps.

3) a generous look around... I used to love Red 1's look around.

4) I simply want my lenses to be a bit closer to what I was getting out of them on film ... (less important but still something)

5) I sometimes don't want to mess about with special crops in RedcineX so as to extract a 16:9 frame and at the moment I have to do this a fair bit.

Anyone else with the same idea?

Don't get me wrong I do love the S35+ modes ... and there are times it really adds but sometimes I just want an easy 16:9 life.

thanks

Michael L

PS it would also work better for the 16-42's in our Pulsar

Hi David

I'm not on the latest beta but I'm pretty sure they don't have a 4k 16:9 mode - and in many situations it does not matter. The only straight 16:9 mode is the 4k hd mode. I aprecate that this is a great tool for those without redrockets (crazy people if you ask me;-) but it is quite far of the fov you expect from a s35mm sensor.

As for the old red1 4k mode I'd guess they are likely to add it... Even just for leagcay reasons (multi cam shoots with red1's?)

Regards

Michael

This would indeed be useful, a few more 16:9 options would save us at least one extra step in cropping (incidentally is a 5K 16:9 mode possible?)

Depends on what you mean by 5k. If you mean as close as they can get from the chip (4800 pixels wide) I'm sure it is all possible.. My guess is Red is simply juggling a huge list of priorities.

...and, if you take the film process as the paradigm, what we have at the moment is absolutely fine..

On my projects (where I define every aspect of the job and workflow) it is ok at the moment. It is very easy to stick a frame leader and create a custom graticicle . And with a clear visual or numerical referance then it is easy to render out the exact resolution one wants.. BUT it is neither moron or 'very tired and under pressure, proof.

My guess the ideal situation for me is a 4480x2520 res... this would be 23.3mm wide and I believe will work with the MBs I mention above (def does with the LMB 15 as I have checked). And the outside hope is it could give Red the option to create the extra 4fps.

If I am following you - asking for a recording mode that accurately replicates the S35 frame (24.9mmx14mm according to Abel Cine) then I would strongly agree it would be a great option to have and I think it would end up being a default recording mode or all the reasons you mentioned.

This would be a great option. Most of my work finishes in 16:9 and a 'true' S35 frame would take best advantage of the Epic.

Yep +1 here too. The cropping issue is frustrating, I understand it's a necessity for the higher frame rate stuff. But a true Super 35mm would make me sway back to the Red much much more!

Can I add full frame higher frame rates with a more compressed image?

I would personally love a truly configurable record area, like the configurable frame guides etc. Maybe pie in the sky, I don't know... For one thing I don't know if the camera self-characterises as far as frame rate and RC performance goes, or if these have to be manually coded per frame size, which would kill the idea right from the outset.

+ 1 for a 4k 16:9 option. I presumed it was on a list of things to do... The more size (and therefore speed options) the better, like a previously mentioned 2.5k that will do (something like) 200 fps.
