A Professional Cinematographer

Ketch, fwiw, you're a positive presence in this community. You've been nothing but helpful and never attack anyone for no reason. Don't let the negativity get you down. Keep on trucking, brother.

Thanks for the kind words Morgan!

Its replies like yours that make it worth it dealing with the few "naysayers/haters".

But yeah at times its harder then others to deal with internet bullies as they are not in front of you and there is not much you can do then suffer their words, but yeah, I am getting a thicker skin ever more and dealing with it better at every turn :)

Just wondering why do you care about this in the first place? To even open this thread... Have fun!

Because in the particular case in relation to the other photo as of this post, the "bully" went on keep posting and I of course deleted and then when in to blocking him entirely, but the set of DM He had sent me while I was doing that, meaning deleting his post and before I blocked him, upset me very much at first, because I take pride and I do what I do with passion and sharing it with those that care to follow is also what I do, because of the school soon to open.

But then I realized that I need to care much less, way less of this few "bullies/haters" around the net, (including few here in our own community that is Reduser) and I started this thread all over the place I guess as a way of support to my self as well as to those that think they can just bully any one in to submission.

And I guess because I am only Human, and some times I also need a little push of support to keep on doing what I do, and need to feel that it is appreciated, since I do it for free, that too is important to me, been appreciated for what I do, but most importantly goes back to insure that the young Aspiring filmmakers understand.

Life is too short to care for every fucking idiot, take it easy and don´t call for them.

You are most absolutely right Ulf, but I guess I am a sensitive one, but yeah, I'm becoming ever stronger against "Haters\Bullies" so don't worry, I'll be Ok :)

I love that you are sensitive, and up front. I believe It is possible to get to know you in a very short amount of time. No bullshit. This is some thing I value!

Today I had a weird conversation with a member of a cinematography society. i was at a little local get together, on my badge stood DOP. He asked what kind of work I did. I told him mostly documantaries, Online prerolls and multi camera stand up shows. He told me that I couldn't call myself a DOP because I didn't do long fiction or had a track record "worthy" in his eyes. I was a bit flabbergasted.

You will get hate a lot. That's the world we live in. It's worse online but there are also a lot of people that will call you out in real life. Have expierenced it more than I can remember. The key is to let it go immediately and doing what you love.

A lot of people including me look up to you. You are good in what you do Ketch. Let nobody let you believe something else.

Ah,
I think that fact has been my curse for many reasons, but I am in fact very happy that no matter how much I think of been a warrior (which I am or I would not be here today) my sensitivity has made me the man I have become, so what you say Joel, truly touches me!!

Sorry that you had such bad experience in person, I know it must be worst even so I would prefer it so to be able to speak directly to that person, but at the end I think you are absolutely right. . . Best let it go immediately and not make them wort any waist of further time and continue on better things.

Thanks so much for the kind words Jaimy, it means a lot to me, I love what I do and will never stop doing it, never!

And I do it because of such love and my passion for the arts, but also for those like you, I strive to inspire others, but funny things is that what inspires me is exactly fellow filmmakers like you :)

Since I posted this I heard I am nominated for best sport doc of 2016/2017 season.

Life has it's surprises:) And that's why you never give up!

A professional DP should never be defined by his equipment.

And you're not alone... we all need some encouragement from time to time. Thank you for being so generous with your time and knowledge Ketch. Also appreciate that you have such a positive outlook on things that get you down. I have learnt a lot from you these past few months.

Correct Homer,
A good DP does the best He can with what He/She has, if it happens to be in possession of the best gear there is, then great, if there are all the toys available then great, if not still one must do the best He/She can with whats available, most of all must use whats needed for the task at hand, no more no less.

I am honored to have been of help to you and I also thank you for the support and kind words in return.

Ketch, I enjoy your posts and wisdom that you contribute to this forum. People will judge you and a few would even go out of the way to criticize you to the point even a saint may get pissed-off beyond reasoning.

Most of the time such behavior comes out of certain folks due to their arrogance fuelled by jealousy, ignorance, stupidity, lack of caring and understanding.

When I was much younger, videotaping an event for a local outfit. They gave me the best equipment they had for the shoot which was an Ikegami HK 355 series camera. A few people were watching me setting up the camera wondering “what the heck is this kid doing with a big camera in the middle of the city”. Some were asking questions about the equipment. I was very polite and answered to best of my knowledge. A couple of hours into the shoot, here comes a tall man and the first question out of his mouth was “Do you even know what the fuck you are doing with that fancy camera?” I was taken aback by his arrogance and insensitivity. He kept on ridiculing me the point I was about to beat the crap out of the bully. Did I say he was much larger in statute than I was? This incident took place in a public venue and there were other people watching this berating. There was a monk among the crowd. Just about the time I was getting ready to fly off the handle, this monk came to me and said one of the best advice I had heard in my life. He said "Child, when you argue with a fool, onlookers cannot tell the difference". With that, I decided to walk away from that situation.

Keep up the good work buddy.

* BTW we have similar setup as yours and get a chuckle or two from the comments we get from local "know-it-all" photographers, whenever we go on a shoot.

Hi Ketch,

As far as I am concerned, a professional cinematographer is a somebody who gets paid for bringing motion pictures for a client. As long as people pay for your images, you can make them however you want. There is a great picture that a friend of mine has where Lubeski is using a flimsy LMB-5 and no follow focus. I am sure he got paid for that job.

Thanks Neil,
And sorry you had to go through that as well, but you are absolutely right, one must be better then they are, and stronger to just walk away, unfortunately in some situation one feels that if nothing is said then the bully continues on to be a bully and to the eye of the others you are the looser. But then again, those that would think that don't deserve my time either :)

You are so right Julian :)

I agree for the most part that a digital cinema camera doesn't need to always be built up, as I often prefer to have a lighter and more compact camera when I operate.

But there's no way you can pull focus as good without a follow focus/Preston and a 1st AC dedicated to this.
