  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

at this price point, i will try as hard as i can to buy 2 of them, stereoscopic 3k scarlet sounds veeeeerry appealing for under 10k. i might even name the cameras left eye - right eye, accordingly. seems like red could also make a 3d rig for them right out the gate, after all, its just $ :greedy:

3k+3d=yumtastic

Absolutely! With the form factor of the prototype, it would be very easy to bolt two of them together and have the right distance between lenses to properly record 3D, no mirrors necessary. Plus, the weight of two Scarlets would probably be very manageable, even on steadycam or shoulder-mount.

Cool stuff. James Cameron will be very jealous.

Let's hope this is provided for.

The 3-D potential of this camera is indeed very good, but it requires something: Absolutely accurate sync! Three things need to be in sync:

1. Shutter firing
2. Lens focus and zoom
3. Exposure

For this, they ought to be using the wireless capability of the camera. In fact, you should be able to sync an unlimited number of Scarlets wirelessly. Then you could not only have 3-D, but stitched multi-camera panoramas and image capture optimized for dome projection or other special venues.

If the cam has power zoom and focus, another nice feature would be a very accurate encoder and calibration on the lenses to match the focus and zoom factor between two or more cameras. If the focus and zoom aren't powered, it would still be nice to at least have a high-accuracy calibrated encoder in the lens that would transmit data wirelessly and illuminate a "matched" indicator or something when one camera is slaved to another.

Being zoom lenses will be a problem.

OOoooo! I like this idea. Built in 3D Firmware and a 3D Mounting accessory.

Sell it all as a $10,000 package. $3k x 2 + $2k bracket + Unified power and storage system of some sort + Firmware to tie it all together.

It has a fixed lens and focus etc you could easily slave everything.

It would make '.R3D' even more applicable. Store two raw images on two layers of a single r3d file.

Insane. I really hope the folks at RED are reading this thread!

I was at NAB last week and one of the guys in the RED booth said that Scarlet may have genlock (to control both cameras) and there "may" be a rig to allow stereoscopic filming. They didn't mention anything about a viewing solution, but perhaps that will come...
