  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

A little confused

Have I got this right?

The camera records .r3d files to the HD (SD card for now). Is this one huge file or is there one per clip?

This where I get a little lost:
Red Alert (camera will do it in the future) takes advantage of the wavelet compression so can make QT files. Some sort of preliminary grade has to be done here (I’m guessing before you press the make QT clips button). Am I right in thinking that the QT clip is a reference (with grade) to the RAW file? The computer has to sort of process it on the fly if you are working with it?

If the camera will be able to do this, do you grade “in camera” or have I got this step wrong?

What is the advantage of Proress HQ over Redcode RAW? They seem to be about the same size.

I’m trying to think up some sort of work flow for a shoot...

Say we have a 3 camera shoot and have 3x(320 HD) 960GB of data.
So I leave that copying (about 10 hours) to a RAID set overnight. We then do the preliminary grade and get our QT clips. I guess for the offline stuff we want something smaller so do I then have to run Compressor rendering out to all our 8 core Power Macs before I get it onto the SAN for people to start working with?

Thanks in advance.

1) it will create a folder per clip

2) each folder contains at least one r3d file, or multiple 2 gb files if it the clip is longer

3) the folder also contains 2 quicktime files

4) the quicktime files will indeed have a "grade" that you've set in camera (like white balance, gain, etc.)

5) if you don't like the results of #4 you can re-generated the quicktimes on your computer with different grade settings

ProRes requires less resources to decode than REDCODE for example.

Ok, so you mean we could do a quick edit
with the QuickTime files on set and if
it is acceptable then we are done?
We only need to go back to the r3d file
if we need to?
So you do not need to use Red Alert to see
the Quicktime files?

Red Guy: that is correct
