  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

A JVC 4K consumer camcorder early in 2012 - am I reading this right?

I hate to say it, but I'm pretty much at a point now where if it's not capturing in a raw format I'm not very interested.

But, that's the close minded me talking. I'll probably test it out no matter what when it's available.

yea, unless you want your work looking like.....well....crapola.

They don't get it, prolly never will, Aint about "resolution" you pencil pushing bean counting dorks. It's about OVERALL IMAGE, and that my friends comes from RAW + RESOLUTION.

forget em, move on.

JVC's 4K camcorder begins making throat-cutting motions towards the RED Scarlet

JVC's exclusive Falconbrid LSI processing takes raw image data from the camera's CMOS device and dematrixes (deBayers) it in real time. Unlike many high end 4K cameras, the GY-HMQ10 is able to output 4K images to a monitor or projection system in real time with virtually no latency. This capability opens up applications in cinematography, medical microscopy, telepresence, specialized observation / surveillance, and live wide-view event coverage.

Using MPEG-4 technology and a variable bit rate H.264 codec operating at up to 144 Mbps, the GY-HMQ10 records up to two hours of 4K video to economical SDHC or SDXC memory cards.

Other features include JVC's patented Focus Assist, as well as manual and auto control of focus, iris, gain, shutter, gamma, color matrix, and white balance. Plus, the camera has the unusual capability of live 4K output via four HDMI terminals.

For sure this camera will please many people who were interested in the original Scarlet and wanted a $3K for 3K kind of deal. It is closer -in spirit- to the original Scarlet than the current evolution. Competition is great.

And that headline shows why it's not a good thing to take seriously gadget sites reporting about pro gear.

Don't see the need to compare a 1/2.3" h.264 camera with high-end cinema gear.
No more than point-and-shoot comparions with DSLRs, on a simple resolution factor.

1/2.3" doesn't leave a lot of potential with low light and DR, but cameras like these usually aren't brilliant in that department anyway. Additional software utility for combining 4 HD streams into one quad HD stream doesn't sound really practical, especially keeping in mind four times of H.264 data which needs conversion into editing-friendly codec.

Theoretically speaking, 36Mb/s of H.264 per 1080p quadrant should provide 50p/60p quad HD stream with minimal artifacts visible to majority of targeted customers. Not in one still frame, in a 50p/60p motion sequence. It should also provide pretty clear downscaled 1080p footage, which in resolution department should beat any handheld 1080p camera in that price-range and higher.

I am happy JVC is bringing it to market by NAB for $5000.
It's time for Canon, GoPro, Panasonic and Sony Consumer divisions
to start pushing 4K camcorders instead of 3D,
and end the 1080 stalemate.

Congratulations JVC!
Welcome to the shallow end of the 4K pool!

Hopefully, next year same time they'll all have something worthy of the deep end,
where we all benefit...
