  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

A Few Post-NAB Questions for RED...

Clamping while maintaining dimensional accuracy will be on the not good list.

I think this is the crux of the problem.

I spent some time talking with an Element Technica guy at NAB about this very thing. He was very complimentary about REDs new CF rods but made the point that if you are going to clamp them in the same spot all the time they will eventually change their diameter in that area.
So even if the strength issue is resolved this problem will catch up with you eventually.

I would love to be able to use CF rods because I think it would be cool to keep the black look on the camera kit. But unless this issue can be solved it probably isn't a good choice.

chas,

I will reserve judgement on RED's CF rods if/when they ship. They have been a long time coming. I suppose it's because RED is trying to get it right. Jarred even had one of their earlier rods "explode" due to clamping or at least that's what I remember of earlier reports.

The Carbon X rods are NOT CF mesh in typical resin. They are something different. I'd really like some more information and specs, what we can expect, etc.. As I said before, Randy at RED told me they are stronger and lighter than regular CF rods. I'm probably going to just order a set of the 24" Carbon X and start using them. I'll see what happens. The weight savings of the 24" is pretty significant, even over the ET ultra rods.

Carbon X are awesome for sure, anybody that as met me I'm not the smallest guy. well I sat on the 24" carbon x, it held me up no problem.

amazing

The Carbon X rods are fantastic, and they will hold up any Camera/Lens configuration you can trow at it, I left the 24" Rods with 50lb on each side (100lb total, for each one rod) lefted there for the all week that I was at NAB (I forget them to say the true:ohmy: ) so I was sure that once bak from NAB the rods would be broken, NOT EVEN BANDED A LITTLE BID, great looking and great in performance.

I just can't see to be using the RED camera with anything else, black on black with the very understated RED dot on the front, or back if you wish, simply sexy as hell,

Btw, I do hope that Big Jon passes on my suggestion to absolutely DO KEEP the RED ring on the new lenses.

Ciao

Jeff CF rods are nothing short of trouble. I know you play hockey so I am sure you have seen NHL games where a CF stick blows up. Stats show that CF hockey sticks fail over 10 times more often then wood sticks. With stats like that CF rods are not something I would ever trust to support my expensive matte box, follow focus and lenses. The small weight savings is not worth the risk.

P.S.- How on earth did you get so much uglier since LART? Please say hi to your sister for me.

cheers
D

Watchoo mean blow up?
