  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

A completely non-bitter feature request.

I have been lurking and posting for quite some time on reduser... hoping one day i would be able to use a piece of RED equipment. In 2009 that day will come. Scarlet is more than i could have EVER asked for, for the price. And I'm glad it fit in closely with my post in the "Choose your price" poll.

All this talk about fixed lens this focus ring that... I am confident in RED/Jim's decisions 100%.... 120% even, since I would cave under the pressure they are under. So I have a humble benign feature request. shoot this down at will.

What about a digital follow focus? With the cameras automatic functionality plus precise manual control, it seems like a plausible feature. Maybe an external plug-in device which is fashioned quite like a traditional follow focus unit, but instead is a high-precision potentiometer-like device. Basic functionality would be ideally as close to a real follow focus as possible. the knob would have a physical stop point on both ends of the axis, indicating closest and farthest focal points. The wheel could control the servos in the lens (if there are any) on a smallest-unit basis (the smallest increments the lens can "focus") and would provide an accurate, repeatable and familliar focus control without having all the gears and expense of a traditional unit.

Possibile extras: Maybe it's wifi?
Maybe a model of it has programmable focus pulls.. in and out points plus duration and maybe even keyframes for the duration?

Anybody like this idea? Would this be possible to make an accessory like this for under $400?

what was i thinking.. this could be made for less than $200, maybe less than $150

Many of the prosumer cameras (at least the older ones, not sure about now) have LANC control which usually gives you zoom & focus control, but it's just "closer" or "farther" rather than an absolute setting. Having the option to make those settings absolute would be quite nice. Using a fixed lens that is already manual or auto control, makes that feature easier to implement, I would think.

The EX1 does this already too albeit via menus rather than hardware controls- but once you get outboard gear it's hard to see how a nice geared mechanical wheel or LANC controller isn't going to be cheaper than a potentiometer digital device.. I suspect if RED decided to make it a feature that they wanted to do, it really wouldn't be that tricky to implement.
