  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

I'm beginning to think we will ALL be surprised at how usefull the 3K capture option is.

You get the benefits of RAW, even for broadcast, Blu-Ray or web finish.

The crop factor isn't ridiculous. It's double.
Easy to calculate. Your 35mm is a 70mm. Your 50mm is now a 100mm.

Lenses aren't a problem at all. Nikon, Cannon, Tokina, all have excellent small zoom lenses at f2.8 for under $2000.

3K captures a 4.97MP frame using 36% of the 5K sensor area. The file size will be 56% the size of 4K.

And we still have high FPS for slow-mo and HDRX available. Redcode 4.1.

And it's still big enough for the Big Screen if it makes it there!:lurk5:

Get outta here. This place is for pro's only. And 3k isn't pro.

(just kidding)

as long as it doesnt look as bad as Epic does in 2K I think it will be a great option. As for the lens conversion. I shoot on GH2 now and the 2x crop isnt an issue at all

As you said, those specs are great. A 3K native cam would have been a dream camera... :(

Totally agree - I think a lot of my projects for the web will be 3K.

+1

I came to this conclusion the day after the Scarlet announcement. Nice to have 4k in your pocket, as well as higher framerate at 2k. But the 3k hits a lot of compromises nicely, and will probably be the most common resolution that I select.

yes...very convenient conversion for the lenses.

Nothing inherently wrong with 3K..suspect one reason Red
abandoned it as a maximum end res. for the old scarlets is because
they need to focus on the high end side of things. Ask yourself how long will it be
before there's a I-phone that can legitimately resolve 2K worth of data..? and
how can you compete with free..?

I shot 3K 50fps for a year on my MX. It's great.

Shoot 3K 2:1, crop to 2400x1350, and you've got an S16mm-sized sensor area with a clean debayer to 16:9 1080p (add letterboxing if you need 1.85:1 or 2.4:1).

The set of 6 Illumina s16 primes is just $12.5K.

If Red made a special "s16" mode that was this exact capture size, we'd get both higher framerates (180fps on Epic) and less date recorded to the SSDs. Not that I'm suggesting this, or anything. Just an observation. An Idea. Perhaps. ;)

Scarlett's 3k is even bigger resolution than the best Alexa raw can offer!

But I'm still hoping for a rapid 25p 4k HDRx implementation wich is THE argument for me to buy a Scarlett.

I look forward to seeing samples of content shot at this size. The availability of slow motion only really starting at 3K on Scarlet-X, it seems this will be a go to format for a lot of 48fps content.

A 50mm going to 100mm is going to be very tough to work with. And likewise for all of the lenses doubling.

It's going to be hard to get wide on that.

Always been in the big sensor camp myself but I have to say having played with REDCine for the first time........using RAW I would love a small 3K camera I can pull out the bag - 'run n gun' with and use RAW to sort out the footage later. Would be amazing!

True. The original Mini Prime concept would be the best. Someone may still make us a prime set in 10/20/30mm.
Until then, I will have to suffer with my CRAZY SHARP Nikon 14-24 2.8 ED-AF, which becomes the workhorse lens at 28-48mm.

And if I do need wide shot, I can record at 4K and that lens becomes a 22-38, faster than I can change a lens.

Shooting with the 8mm Illumina in S16 mode is like shooting with a 14mm in S35 mode. That's wide enough for most people.

It depends which sensor format you're used to working with.

If you've done lots of 35mm/APS-C/Red 4K, the sensor crop isn't that bad and 'in action' you get used to it (as on the Micro 4/3 AF100 etc) - it's about 1.3X vs the Red One and 1.5X vs Epic.

If your point of reference for the sensor size is a 5DMKII, then you may feel restricted - then it's 2.1X or thereabouts... that is a big difference if you're used to framing in this format.

This debate rolled on (an on!) in other forums and it was always the 'gotcha' of the original/reference sensor size that caught people out (check out FS100 vs AF100 on other forums, for example).

I'm surprised this has come up so many times within the last week, but maybe a lot of 5D owners are going Scarlet :)

Personally, M4/3 Sensor crop @3K is OK by me... it means we get a 3K Raw image and it's not radically different for the lens choice on the sensor crop (Red One 4K vs AF100 is about 1.3X - so you'd need to shoot with a 28m on M4/3 to get a close match to a 35mm on Red One 16:9)

I'd like a 3K Anamorphic mode (as I have Ana projects coming early next year) - but that's just me (and a few others ;)

So, it really does come down to your experience with differing 'base' sensors and formats - and how that affects the lenses you like to shoot on.

I'd LIKE to shoot on a set of Cooke SK4 s-16mm Primes!
. . . But they cost more than a nice second home.
6mm, 9.5mm, and 12mm would be about perfect.

I don't know if I can hang 3+lb lenses on a Nikon-mount Scarlet. Guess I'll need a Ti PL mount too.

Now, if they actually cover 3K on the Scarlet, there's another issue.
We have heard from people with Epics that some S-16 lenses won't cover 3K.
We should compile a list of those that actually do.
