A Camera As A Gift

Hi Michael,

Pro8mm sells their refurbished Canon 1014XLS for $1,995. Or about $200 more than what I paid for a near-new Bolex RX5 body and four immaculate Switar Preset lenses (10mm, 26mm, 50mm and 75mm). And about $1,400 more than I paid for my Beaulieu 4008 ZMII. Plus, the Max8 gate modification is another $995, so almost $3,000 for the complete camera. I'm sure the Pro8mm camera is worth that to some people, but it is something to consider.

BTW I do use some of the Pro8mm re-packaged Kodak Vision stocks, just shot three rolls last week, two 50D (01) and a 250D (07). I do like this film a lot and the carts seem to run through the camera flawlessly.

If it's just to get a cheap camera to play around with this site has some:

Don't know what condition they're stuff is in though.

Yeah it's nice film right... Something between super 8pm and 16.
Yeah pro8's cameras are expensive.
It's been a long time but I remember the canon 814 was nice (and small). I'm sure u could find one in great condition for under500$

Wow, lots of responses! Thanks for all the input everyone. I'll be reading back through them more carefully as I get through the day - I've got some render passes to do.

I will note that neither I nor my fiancee are terrible interested in actually editing the film - we were hoping to have a DI done to disk in an editable format (Prores). What are the costs like for that, assuming 16mm film?

Hi Michael,
One fun, easy to carry, relatively inexpensive ($1500) camera system is an Ultra 16mm modified Canon Scoopic. It shoots like a Super 8mm Camera, takes daylight loads, and can be thrown in a back-pack or shoulder bag. Very family documentary friendly. At Cinelicious we pioneered the post workflow for Ultra 16mm which is native 1.85 and perfect for going to HD. We're offering Ultra 16mm transfers straight to HD ProRes 422 HQ or ProRes 4444 from our Spirit Datacine.

Here's a link to the current Ralph Lauren "Wimbledon" campaign that was shot with one of our Ultra Scopics and transferred to HD ProRes from our Spirit: http://www.vimeo.com/12429314

And more specifics on the Ultra 16mm format in general can be found on our website here: http://cinelicious.tv/we-love-film/small-formats

I'm not sure where you're at in the world but we also offer Color Cast Live for free which would allow you to remotely view the telecine transfer and work with our colorists for live feedback on your color session.

Good luck!

-Paul

Fran,

It absolutely does. Thank you so very much for your post. Personally, I'd love to get the A-Minima. If I can find a way to make that happen I will. Buying new is definitely not an option at that price point, but I will certainly keep my eyes open for used cameras.

I also appreciate your input regarding S16 and S8 cameras. There is a lot out there and every post like yours really makes a difference to someone like me who really knows nothing about this part of the field.

Michael, just wondering if you've managed to find a camera yet, A-Minima or other?
