I very much hope that someone like Barry Green is coming out with a tutorial on...not only the camera but the workflow with regards to Final Cut Pro. Raid camera set-ups, EVF, LCD, Lenses; basically everything under the sun, so to speak, from start to finish, to get the film started and finished without a bunch of "what does this do" questions:) I would pay..... well a lot for a DVD like that!!!!

I'M CATHOLIC, SO I'LL BE GOING TO CHURCH THIS SUNDAY, LIGHTING A CANDLE AND SAYING A PRAYER...GOD I HOPE IT'S ANSWERED!!!!

Excellent suggestion......going to church.....forget the DVD.!

However what table of contents would you pay good money to see in a DVD.

Okay I guess the camera user guide will have most of the camera functions although some of the 'Hands on' DVDs go thru this in more details.
Similiarly with RedCine standalone software.

What additional info would anybody want to see?

DF

yeah, i haqd hoped much of that info would be in the included DVD

Portanova,

Barry Green made very few posts on the old DVX User RED forum before it was decommissioned, very few posts on the DV Info RED Forum to date, and to my knowledge no posts yet on RED User since it was created. In checking the "B" and "G" listings under Member List for RED User I don't see Barry listed. Unless he has registered on RED User under a pseudonym handle, he isn't a member of RED User. If he's been lurking here, he hasn't been posting.

Barry was deeply involved with DVX User, and created guides and DVDs for the DVX and HVX, but I'm curious, what indicates to you that Barry would be current on the development of RED One and write a guide and DVD for the use of RED One, in view of his lack of participation on the DVX User RED forum and DV Info RED forum over the past 17 months, and apparently no membership here on RED User since it was created?

I have a suggestion.

Gibby,

I have an idea for a complimentary DVD you could do that I would buy in a heartbeat... And I bet a TON of other people would as well.

You are easily one of the most knowledgeable, and surely one of the very most helpful people on this forum, and more germane to my idea for a DVD, the person with arguably the most crossover experience between ENG/EFP and cine styles.

What I think would be outstanding is for you to do tutorial DVD's on:

1. How to get the most out of your Red for ENG/EFP style shooting. Including both technical and aesthetic examples.

2. What the differences will be from ENG/EFP when working in a cine style (gear to know about, techniques, technical considerations)

3. How to adopt the best of both styles into a set of techniques and gear options that allow shooters to blur the line between ENG/EFP and cine style shooting.

I don't know about anyone else, but I want to know a lot more about the gear and techniques than I do menus and such. Having someone tag along with you on your various shoots would be a great way to learn about this stuff, you seem like the man to do the teachin'...

(I'd be interested in Shawn's DVD's too by the way, maybe you guys could even team up, or even bring in more Red owners for a community built training series)

Cheers, and thanks again for all the awesome info you've already provided me and everyone else.

Tim

TimothyD,

Thanks for those kind words....

I wish I had the time to create a DVD, book, and/or online giude for field use of RED One. It's the kind of project I'd really enjoy!

Unfortunately (well...fortunately!) I have a heavy schedule of production coming up. I have a D-cinema feature and four HDTV series in development for 2007-2008 with my production alliance partner Ken Corben ("Sharkguy"). These are world-travel projects that involve some of my favorite genres to work in - nature, alternative sports, cultures, and adventure travel. I can't say any more about them right now, but they are really cool projects.

Though I won't have the time to produce a RED One guide/DVD, I think RED will have that base well covered with the guide they will reportedly ship with the cameras. If Shawn produces a DVD, I'm sure it will be good.

RED cameras 1 through 12 will ship first. My first RED camera is #8. I'll be putting #8 through extensive testing, initially by myself for a day, and shortly thereafter for a few days with a great group of DPs, directors, and cinematographers in Los Angeles. Summaries of the results of those tests will be posted here on RED User, plus I'll write online and magazine articles about the tests for Studio Daily and Studio Monthly.

I've always been some one to share my thoughts, ideas, and techniques with the RED online forum community, and that won't change. The cool thing is that we'll now get to shift gears from posting about the developmental stage of RED One, and be able to then post about real world use of the entire RED One camera system. Me and Sharkguy will set up a blog before we start production for our feature and TV series, so that we can update what's happening with our use of the RED One cameras (we'll have 4 between us), and upload photos from our work around the world. My wife is a good photographer and our production assistant, so she'll document the mayhem location! We’ll also be posting here on RED User, and I’ll be writing on-location magazine articles. All of this input should be a good “guide” for you on practical field use of RED One – what you were seeking anyway.

Gonna be fun putting RED One to work!

Just be sure to get yours done before my RED #1110 ships. Otherwise I'll have to make a competing product. :shiftyph34r:

Anyway, I'm looking forward to anything like this from the first batch of RED owners..

I'm sure you'll nail it Shawn...

I think it would be wise to limit it to equipment ideas and actual field production suggestions and techniques. Those are things that won't get out-dated easily.

Maybe a really cool, fast-paced DVD with chapters or portions thereof on:

Lens selection (and why), the difference between cine style and EFP style, camera setup options, accessory suggestions for various genres of production (and why), recording mediums (and why), hand held, shoulder held, tripod use, camera security and care, "how to" guerilla production, simple backups, shooting for the edit, overview of specialty shooting (water, air, jib, stabilizer), large crew use vs. run 'n gun.

Those were just some quick thoughts that came to mind for a field use guide. I'm sure you and the guys on this board can brainstorm some more.

Good luck with your project! Have fun with it...

Somebody should start a subject/table of content list for whatever DVD they're thinking of doing, which should provide a lot of suggestions/feedbacks on what people actually require.
Public scrutiny of what 'actually' people need/want was one of the founding tenets of this forum!
I'm very interested as I'd like to see a workflow website with all the different options and if someone is willing to do it better than me...great, I'm more interested in the information going out there.
By the same token, if I'm helping someone produce a product that I'll buy for 100 bucks, that greats also.
If it were me I'd state my objective, request the support of this forum, listen to their input and produce it in an open forum environment.
Also realise that as soon as your dvd is out, someone can if setup, copy/improve on your idea and have a competing product out there in a months or so after yours.

Cheers,

Stop press: didn't see you've already begun on the table of contents, Gibby!!

You know the thing I'd most like to see is comparison video which'll show me a 'section' of a 4K, 2K, HD, SD image, and at different bit depths.

I'd also like to see a comparison fo a few different codecs.

And some bench marks times to demosiac and output at low and high rez versions.

Cheers,
