  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

9 More 4k DPX files... did i mention it's a Ford Model?

Thank you for the pics. Looked like fun.

What kind of backpack is that?

Just a regular old backpack that happened to be in the shot. We used it to carry the batteries and misc equipment along with us.

Sometime a bag is just a bag. :)

When you say "re-shimmed" what was wrong with the mount?
Do you think all RED's will have to be adjusted????

I believe projectred is a great idea and a great looking site. I will try to contribute too when my camera arrives.

While checking the cp_cate_04.dpx i found something that slightly disappointed me. I tried to "play" with the footage in Fusion in 32bit-float mode but soon realized that i couldn't restore any of the highlights or any of the extra dynamic range.

Although Emery says that it is a low contrast 4K DPX file it behaved as if it was a 8bit TGA and the highlights are clipped in a not so beautiful way.

In this pic i compressed slightly the highlights to make it a little more apparent of how they clip:

I see that the way the sun lights the scene, makes it by default very contrasty but i was expecting RED to handle it better.

Could it be that it is an issue with the DPX export?

yeah I noticed the same thing.
Maybe Emery could chek it again in RedAlert, as I'm sure there is a way to fix that prior to export.

This may be due to the fact they were shooting at 1pm in daylight with no ND. They were probably stopped down all the way and couldn't expose less. The no ND info comes from the projectred website. Which underlines the inportance of having ND filters when shooting with a Red One, this is like shooting with 500 ASA film !!!

Cheers,
Damien

This is absolutely correct. That was a huge takeaway from the day -- you really must have NDs and a matte box on a day like Saturday. The frames are posted with these flaws too illustrate different conditions and the things you should be be prepared for.

The frames we posted of the bridge, pond, and kids on the rock were shot on the following day, Sunday when there was significantly more cloud cover which helped beat the strong contrast between foreground and sky.

still though, that's clipping quite hard. can you check redalert again?

Emery has this particular file -- I'm sure he'll be on shortly to answer more directly, but there was plenty of user "learning curve" during our tests.

The camera works beautifully -- we were running and gunning and likely clipped many a shot even at T22 because of the lack of filters and a blazing sun.

Both our cameras may be locked up fairly shortly, but if there are some crack DPs that want to get together in NYC, let's all talk about a Central Park controlled test.

Yea it is clipping beyond what can be recovered from the RAW file. I could pull it in a little but would not be able to save everything. I have another frame where I increased the shutter to 1/60th which gave me a lil extra room to play with the iris. I dont have access to it at the moment but I will post it later tonight. You'd need ND with just about any camera on a bright exterior with high contrast, RED is no different. I think it handled pretty well all considering. Imagine if we had a nice big silk, NDs, and some fill light... it would look incredible.

There you go, Emery. Thank you for sharing.

I hate to say it but it looks as if film has the edge here. Even without NDs, silks, and fill light you could never clip the highlights in that way. They might burn eventualy but with a much smoother curve than what we see in that frame.

I am waiting your new Red Alert export for a final verdict. It might not be so bad after all. :-)

And just to end this on a positive way.. the other frames are fantastic!!

projectred lens test

projectred lens test

i just downloaded comparative lens test TIFF files (48MB each) and noticed similar bending as you guys on these photos from park. go there - www.projectred.net and scroll down to - 27th september - Tests, problems, and gripes... and check for yourself. i beleive that during interior test there is no need for mentioned ND filters etc :)

here is enlargment of one of the presented test boards. unfortunatelly cannot upload tiff, but here is jpg (set to best quality) so, at least you can check how it looks before you make your own judgment.
i know that all of you know that, but just in case - please remeber that jpg adds another level of artefacts, so it looks really bad, but it is just an illustration so you can go to projectred site and check tiffs.

and if you have LCD monitor, try to move your head up-down-left-right you can see those atrefacts on tiff files maybe better... i beleive this is connected with converting original files to tiffs?
maybe someone can answer this, who is more oriented. or even expert.

thank you,

filip

Looks killer Omen! I really like the 2nd look. Has a cool editorial vibe.
