  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

9 iPad Lighting System!

I think some are lookinig at this wrong.. The idea is not "let's go buy 9 Ipads and light a model" It's more like: Hey power's out and we need this shot.. John, bill, kevin, marie.. Let me borrow your IPads for a minute.

Or:

I have an idea on how to light this car really cool.. Watch this!

If your power's out, then you've got bigger issues.

This effect is better done with litepad's. Much cheaper too.

Or light painting animation like this...

Amazing people Tim!, extruding light from a screen wooow, this is light paint.

Ipad for lighting? Portable, autonomus, remote, colorable... have anybody ask for a litepanels quote? Ipad is about same price range; with the battery inside. I guess that would not be difficult to make an app that equal 3200º, 5600º and more.

two cents of the IPAD, but I hope that apple understands that they are a failure and focus on macpro development :furious3:

Thanks for sharing, Sanjin. The shoot was just for fun. I'm certainly not advocating doing this in a professional environment. But it's nice to know that it'll work in a pinch if necessary.

I used a couple of iphones using the flashlight app to light a drivers face (lights placed inside the instrument cluster) during a night drive scene. It worked pretty good. It puts out a surprising amount of light. I have also used it as a hair light. Pretty cool.

Thanks Jay, Ketch, Yousuf, Tim,... then I can see that people are creative and have open mind about iPad lighting solution in a certain situation.

Sanjin,

Few like you... Heck, do not look for gratification from the opinion of others. I think this is very creative, and I do appreciate always your posts (or almost all, to be 100% honest) since they always create a great point of discussion.

So keep posting, please!!! :iagree:

You would never buy ipads with using them as lighting in mind but lets say that six or seven people on set have them and are willing to loan them to you for the day. Free good quality lighting. What if you are shooting a night scene on a beach and your led lightpanel batteries run out? You just gonna pack it in for the day? Hell no, bust out you ipad!

People you need to think out of the box! This guy says in the article that the ipads were loaned, no one would buy them for this purpose but since so many people have them on set, they can work in a pinch to get you out of some problems (like finding out that there are no power sources for your traditional lights). I loved it, believe me I have seen and heard of much more ridiculous things that have been done on set. Its the footage that matters, not how you did it. Looking at the final pictures, I never would have guessed that it was lit with ipads so thats all that matters.

Luis,

thanks for your understanding and kind words.

Also I didn't came here to be liked or gain any sort of charisma...

because I try to keep a honest way of thinking that sometimes can become a bit provocative

but that's only way how you can get out more info about the things that we are all interested in here.

Don't always expect that people have to like you and also don't be stupid to drop yourself anytime in lower kind of waters of deep vain and selfish behavior.

We are after all visual experimentalists, or at least we should be...

mah...If everyone likes you, you have a diluted personality... ;)

now if they had put a custom animation synced across each iPad so the lighting changed
from remote control then it would have been cool

but it seems they didn't so ... meh

But.. they made you have this thought... so you could do this or someone reading this might think to do it, so in essence the experiment did work. It got ideas moving.

It says it all right there on the site where the video is:

"Now before the haters start commenting let me first agree with you, yes, this is totally impractical (sidenote: most of my best ideas are often also my worst ideas). Nine iPads will set you back around $4,500. That amount of money can buy you a LOT of lumens in the form of a generic monobloc. This is not intended to be an exercise in excess, but rather a self-imposed limitation to help flex the creative muscles, and to make a point."
