Read and watch more about that fantastic 9 iPad Lighting System by By Jesse Rosten.

Nine iPads will set you back around $4,500. That amount of money can buy you a LOT of lumens in the form of a generic monobloc. This is not intended to be an exercise in excess, but rather a self-imposed limitation to help flex the creative muscles, and to make a point. Think about it. One 60 watt bulb can put out more light that a truckload of iPads. And you don’t have to spend truckloads of cash to find a 60 watt. This whole making art thing is all about what you do with what you have.

Martin,

whatever but keep in mind that iPad doesn't need additional batteries, cables, no heat,...etc...

Even one or two iPads are helpful especially for inside of the car night shots, very narrow rooms, toilets,

under the table shots, any indoor and outdoor dark/night spaces (for close up shots, macro details, etc,...)

just to be more creative...

I get the same results with a $300 daylight fluro rig, but I still think the idea is cool, and great to see! I've done a similar thing with my iPhone in order to create a highlight in an eye. You do what you can to make it work! Noice!!!

We had a bunch of LED sheets about the size of an A4 for exactly this application. The nice thing about them was that the LEDs were turned sideways, so the sheets gave a nice diffused light.

I think they're powered off AA batteries and they lasted quite long.

I don't know their name and I cannot read my mail on them, but they sure worked.

now if they had put a custom animation synced across each iPad so the lighting changed
from remote control then it would have been cool

but it seems they didn't so ... meh

I really don't think this video is suggesting that this guy is going to go out and light everything with iPads. I think it's amazing that you can do a photoshoot with a friggin computing device. Crazy days we're living in. Something like this will be more practical and way cheaper someday.

That has to be one of the stupidest things i have ever seen... What a waste!

That is the first thing that came to mind when I saw this.

now if they had put a custom animation synced across each iPad so the lighting changed
from remote control then it would have been cool.

But I guess there could be some potential if you already have the iPads and can program them to do something interesting...

I think some are lookinig at this wrong.. The idea is not "let's go buy 9 Ipads and light a model" It's more like: Hey power's out and we need this shot.. John, bill, kevin, marie.. Let me borrow your IPads for a minute.

Or:

I have an idea on how to light this car really cool.. Watch this!

Actually we have done the same few days ago, the light output off the iPad with one of the Flash Light apps, set to bright, did give out in off lighting to shoot few more pics,
and it was great, as the light is really soft, so no Hot spots at all, we were off course lucky that every single model and two of the Crew people had iPads , plus mine ;) that made 5 ;).

So at your next shoot, don't bring any lighting..just tell every one on the shoot to bring their iPads hehe.. just kidding off course, but it is something of use in some situations, why not?

I even used 3 iPhones to lit up the face of a model ;).

I think Sanjin is correct that iPad would be an awesome lighting application in small interiors such as cars, and situations where you need changing lights. The cool part is that when you're not using them for lights, use them for something else (surfing the net?). Totally agree its overkill to just buy iPads purely for lighting.

Thanks Jay, Ketch, Yousuf, Tim,... then I can see that people are creative and have open mind about iPad lighting solution in a certain situation.
