  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

8x Fixed Zoom?

Here's something shiny I've been playing with

See that longer lens-looking thing on there? Yeah, that's called a fixed zoom lens. It's roughly twice the magnification of the other lenses on there.

Your grandfather was nice enough to lend you a toy to play with I see.

Now again, I ask you, why on earth would you possibly give credence to the preposterous notion that Red would equip a camera with a fixed focal length lens like the one you just showed me? Even in your example, that camera has more than one lens, and if I'm not mistaken you can detach at least one of those lenses to add what ever suits your needs, unlike the Scarlet in question.

There have been a couple times in this thread I thought you might have been kidding, just playing around to get a rise out of people, but sadly I think you just proved that wasn't the case.

I believe that this is similar to what the other poster was referring to. Now if you could kindly refrain from being a jackass, I'm sure a lot of the users on this forum would appreciate it.

Are you sure that's a zoom? To me it looks like a 100mm fixed focale length Switar, but I could be wrong. I believe the accepted definiton of a fixed lens be it a zoom or single focale length is one that can not be interchanged. Like what you find on most consumer camcorders.
Also all those lenses on that Bolex h-16 are removable from those "C" mount turret holes.

Why would I want to get a rise out of people? This is a forum filled with some very smart people that I respect and have been learning from over the past year or so. It apparently can also have a lot of condescending people on here, but I shouldn't go there.

You are apparently regarding me as an idiot because of simply pointing out a syntax error. Yes, I know I've already said those words at least three times in this post, but apparently you aren't reading those words. Let me reiterate: "8x Fixed Zoom" is a syntaxical error. Is this a big deal? Absolutely not. Am I the only one who noticed it? No. Has anyone here actually thought that a smart company like Red would manufacture something like that? Not for a second. I've said that enough times now, but apparently you have selective reading or something. It's easier to treat someone you don't know like an idiot than it is to listen to the points they are trying to make.

This is apparently getting out of hand, so I recommend if there is anything further you have to say to me, please do so over PM. There's no reason we have to waste everyone else's time and patience with asinine bickering.

Behold: the mighty comma.

Behold: the mighty comma.

"8x" and "fixed" both modify "zoom," so it could be "8x, fixed zoom" as we understand "zoom" to mean zoom lens.

If you use "fixed, 8x zoom lens," it means the same thing. "8x zoom" is a modifying clause for "lens"(I think it's clause. I haven't studied heavy grammar in years.) It's a little neater as you link the "8x" and "zoom."

We ignore a lot of punctuation and grammar rules in non-formal and marketing language.

But, hey! Everyone is right!

English majors correct me if I'm wrong. I only posted because the confusion was confusing me.

Why is that called "fixed zoom lens"?
Shot 3 shorts with that camera. The lenses are removable (C mount). That lens doesn't look like a zoom.
Maybe you're messing up the meanings, that's a Tele lens.
Zoom = variable focal distance lens. Tele = a lens that shows a "closer" image than a "normal" lens (a 25mm is a normal for 16mm, a 50 is a Tele, a 16 is a Wide).
A Tele lens is a fixed lens. If it's not fixed, it is a zoom lens set in the Tele position.

I think what Austin is worried about (correct me if I'm wrong) is whether the zoom maybe fixed in shot
The only thing I've seen like that is a very cheap digital photo camera, or a cell phone. Never a in video camera, and I would force myself to accept that I'm in a nightmare if I see that announcement from RED. LOL :P

Hope it helps :) - And please stop arguing about unnecessary things!
Rodrigo

P.S: Don't forget to notice that in the epic_scarlet page, the words written in the "brain" are just "8x FIXED", doesn't mention "zoom" because it is not necessary.

Fixed zoom while shooting?? What the hell is wrong with you people?

How it is that you're bright enough to figure out how to turn on the computer, long onto this site, make a username and password and then bang around on your keyboard long enough to somehow form complete sentences is beyond me.

I just don't get it, are they telling kids in special needs schools about Red or something? How on earth are you people coming up with this nonsense?

Will someone please give these guys something shiny to play with so they'll go away for a bit?

Ethan, I think I made it perfectly clear that this is a misunderstanding that SOME people (on other forums) have made due to the wording 'fixed zoom'. I also stated that I believe it is NOT AT ALL the case regarding the Scarlet.
As Roderigo mentioned some digital cameras have a fixed zoom while shooting and perhaps that is where these people have got their ideas from. Neither myself nor Austin have suggested the Scarlet in fact lacks the ability to zoom in shot, but there is room in the marketing lingo for people to make this mistake especially as we are still awaiting info on the fly-by-wire set up.

There is no need to patronize the people who point out the possiblity for misinterpretation. Granted you'd have to be very 'green' to make this assumption but believe it or not the pricing on the fixed lense Scarlet makes it possible for people who only own very basic equipment to at least start considering saving pennies. RED made it possible.
Remember that not everyone that has heard about the scarlet fixed lense have been visiting these forums on a daily basis and dribbling over new announcements. There are people who haven't even seen a render  All they are going on is hearsay, marketing language and specs that change regularly.
